Help please - 44 mag Shikari misfiring
« on: April 16, 2007, 06:18:55 PM »
Took the Shikari for it's first run to the range the other day and had a couple of misfires. The primer was indented a bit and went off on the second fall of the hammer.

Tried the PMC ammo to start, failed on a couple then had 1 with the Remington ammo and put it away.

I'm thinking maybe a weak hammer spring or worn firing pin???

Any comments or suggestions?

Apart from the misfires it's a hoot to shoot!  ;D

I'd say order a new hammer spring from Numrich, but that's not really an option from Down Under!! :-\  If you can't get one, I'll order one for ya and ship it to ya. If it takes the same spring as current models, I already have some, but it may take a double spring, I don't know for sure.

Tim, that's awfully nice of you (as per ususal!  ;)  ).

I'll check with Numrich after I pull the other one out. They do list a replacement but I'm not confident the schematic they have for the 155 is "picture perfect". I'll let you know.  ;)

As an aside, I now am leaning heavily to the spring being weak. To test the firing pin I removed the barrel, cocked the action and placed a coin on the receiver over the firing pin hole. Did it with the Shikari and the SB2. The Shikari shot the coin a few feet up, the SB2 nearly put it through the roof!  :D

Seems the spring is the culprit.

I'd guess you were correct. All the old H&Rs had short lasting hammer springs. Real common.
