Is Rossi or NEF still making an open sight .357 rifle?
« on: April 17, 2007, 12:45:34 PM »
I want an open sight .357 single shot rifle in the worst way...but everything I read says they're all "discontinued", etc.  I know I can find something that uses a scope but I want open sights...any suggestions?  I can't really afford a T/C so NEF or Rossi is the ticket, but can they be found anywhere?

H&R only offers it in the accessory barrel program, not as a complete rifle, it does have iron sights. I believe Rossi used to offer it, but it isn't on their web page, so they must have discontinued it.

i thought that i was the only odd fellow who thought the single shot 357 with maybe a peep sight was the pure form of hunting. ok so i am very lucky in that i hunt a lot because of my job i have just bought a mint blue and wood rossi 357 single for 100 bucks equivalent. here in the uk its regarded as very odd.

It's a shame Rossi quit making the .357 single shot.  I (fortunately) bought one about 8 years ago and not many guns are more fun or as economical to shoot.

I put a Williams Guide receiver sight on mine (had to build up the front sight a little bit higher) and it's a vast improvement over the (cheap) open sights that came on it.

I've often thought the ideal setup would be a dual aperture rear sight in a flip-up style so one could be used for .357's and one for .38 Special loads.

Tim - glad you posted that info on the H&R's. I wasn't aware the .357 accessory barrel was available with open sights, I just assumed they came with scope rails only, like the complete rifles.

Unfortunately, that was over 3yrs ago, since mid 2009, H&R only offers the 357 and 44mag accessory barrels with scope rails, you can have sights added, but at added cost. The Williams WGRS-HR peep sight ($25 shipped from H&R) will work in the two rear scope mount holes, but a front sight still needs to be added. Gardner used to add front and rear barrel sights for $47, dunno what Ilion will charge now.

The H&R Talo Trapper 357 and 44mags come with 18¾" barrels w/sights and wood stocks tho.

Redcoat, please don't keep us in suspense. We know you have draconian firemars laws in the UK. However, you said you get to hunt a lot as part of your job. WHAT do you do, organize fox hunts?  ;D

hi from the uk , yes we are an oppressed people the gun laws made by urban socialist politicians forbid us to protect ourselves and those of us who hunt deer for food are regarded as dangerous deviants. I am not joking or exagerating, i am a forester on a large country estate owned by an earl .I shoot a win 3030 with a lyman peep sight and my young son shoots a 243 cz, i would dearly love, a cap and ball revolver and a hawkins 45 percussion, but i have to join a club to do so, the application forms and waiting times are appalling as well. You dont realise how lucky you are, but with the looming lead ban coming up, in europe and california, its clever gun control, dont dismiss this as alarmist. regards and good wishes from a cousin.

As of 7 pm standard Mountain time, Davidson or Gallery of guns had TALO Trapper model Handi rifles (26 each) available in .357 magnum.  These are 18" barrels and my price here in Arizona is under $270 tax included.
Forgot to stick in these are ramp front and adjustble rear open sight.

Redcoat, thanks for taking the time to let us know. Yes, I'm apalled at the blurbs I read of what's happening in your country with regard to self-defense, and your rights. You've got it quite tough there, no doubt! :-[
