I found this thread very interesting!  Just a thought guys and gals, for what it's worth!  All guns push their bullets with gas!  An airgun uses one form of gas, conventional (powder burning) guns use another.  The secret is to generate enough push on the bullet before it leaves the barrel to do the job.

The key difference (and benefit) between an airgun and a firearm is that an airgun does not use the act of combustion to propel the slug.  It compresses the propellant (air), rather than combusting it.  Nothing gets hot.

A propellant that is re-usable, available anywhere, and free once you have invested in a HillPump.  250 shots costs about $24-$28 for most of the .454 slugs I shoot, so I can afford to sharpen my shooting skills more often with an airgun.  1 inch groups off the steady stix at 50 yards is easy.

For small game hunting, the .22, and .25 caliber PreCompressedPneaumatic airguns get about 15-60 shots on a fill of air on high power.

i just want to add my 2cents. I had a crosman 2200 and a 22LR gun. i used them both to hunt all kinds of varmints and small game. Up to about 50 yards there was no real diffidence between the airgun and real gun and game animal like coons and beavers. It was more like the 270 vs the 30/06 on game, the larger and faster one having more put down power and range up to a point.  I have seen hogs killed here with the 909 45cal airguns and there legal here in FL for hogs and non-game and some other animals. In my book if it can pass the phone book test(going thought one or most of it) then it can kill big game.

airguns can be used for all non-game,protect animals, and non-native animals. that means it leadgal here to hunt

Armadillos,Jamaican Fruiting Bats,Vervet Monkey ,Rhesus Monkey   1930   At least 10 years   Established ,Squirrel Monkey      1960's   At least 10 years   Established   ,Feral Dog,Coyote ,Feral Cat,Mongoose ,Ferret ,Red Fox (i would check this one before hunting)  1950s   At least 10 years,Pronghorn(puible land there is a few, i have seen some and did not know what they were),Feral Goat      1960s   At least 10 years   Established  ,Axis Deer ,Sambar Deer,Feral Pig      Unknown   At least 10 years   Established
,Nutria,rats,Mexican Red-bellied Squirrel    1938   At least 10 years   Established
,Black-tailed Jackrabbit    1930s   At least 10 years   Established. so yeah there lots to shoot with a airguns here in FL.  so, if you have the time you could find and hunt some of these things(there all over the state, like here in st.Pete there Blue-and-yellow Macaw  flying all over the place and in Miami there jacks rabbits so it pays to ask around)

I think there might be more than just air in the air rifles at work here ;)
When the first explorers were mapping the western USA they had an air rifle with them that they used to kill deer & elk.I met a man and his son at www.mac1airgun.com ( this is an excellent shop to buy air rifles & have them serviced read his site information I've had him work on 2 of mine & referred lots of others air rifle buyers to his shop), he told me about his 25 caliber air rifle that he used a scuba tank to charge &  turned coyote heads into canoes. In California it is legal to hunt all nonmigratory game birds ( such as turkey, grouse, chukar, quail & pheasant)with an air rifle of .20 caliber or larger.

Is there anything i should know about the gun itself?.Thanks for some responsable and inlightning insights in the wounderfull world of airgunning. :)panman.

I haven't slugged my bore yet, but from all reports I think they are .455, so .456 seems to be the way to go for a nice tight seal.  I've had great luck with .457 if the lead is relatively soft (T/C MaxiBalls).  Cast with anywhere from pure lead, to BHN9 or so and your golden.  Use big meplats to get the most out of your rifle.  Send me an e-mail when you get your 909S, and I can direct you to an airgun tuner that will bump the power up to around 300+fpe (BIG difference).  Be aware that there are tuners of the 909S out there making false claims about their work, so shop around when it comes to tuners.

When you install the cocking lever, there may be a void between the back of the cocking lever and the hammer.  I plugged it with some paper towel so as to re-enforce the lever.  The screw that secures the cocking lever fit loosely in mine, and needed to be tightened often.  I wrapped some teflon tape around it for a snug fit to resolve that issue.  I had broken 3 cocking levers before figuring all this out.

Oh, if you have any powder-burners, don't forget to take the dust off of them every once and awhile when you get your 909S.  It often takes people awhile to get back around to shooting the powder-burners because the bigbore airguns are so much fun (and cheap!) to shoot.

Here are some slugs to try.  You can order the molds to most of them at www.biglube.com

Definitely order the EPP/UG's (at .454 they still shoot very well), and the 210grain 45-70 "Plinkers".

I have seen these big bore air rifles in action and I need no convincing. I just can not afford one yet.
In the mean time, I am attempting to build my own. Right now it is going to have to be a smoothbore.
Havn't quite figured out how to rifle the seamless high pressure tubing I am going to use for the barrel yet.
Just a couple of questions, Is the compressed air as sensitive to heat and cold variation as C02? Also,
with compressed air is moisture in the tank an issue? To simplify the design, it is also going to be a muzzle loader.

No it is not sensitive to heat and cold variations like CO2.  I have yet to see my rifles' zero change one bit as a result of any change in temperature.

I would say that you want to avoid having any moisture in the tank.  No worries there if you are using a scuba tank to fill your rifle, as that is dry air.  When filling with a pump, get the HillPump with the DryPac accessory, which removes the moisture from the air before it is pumped into the rifle.  There are also moisture removers that can be installed on the fill hose.

When it comes to hand pumps, the HillPump is the ONLY way to go.  I wouldn't waste money on anything else.

I have to tell yas guys and gals Butcher45 is the real deal.I recieved my 909 and couldnt be more happer. The power you wont believe!!.I set up a couple of 2x4s in a square.sat down and fired a round ball from about 15yds.blew through one and went in about 3/4 of the way into the one in back of it!!.The second one was about 2ft away frome the first.I know that it went about 3/4 of the way because it splintered the back side of the second one.The same with a swc,and a hollow point.I dont know how much power-air it had in it as it had whatever air they shiped in it.This gun rocks!!!.All that power,AND no,i MEAN,NO,recoil, none zero.I have to send it back because Butcher45 has decovered that the sear on these rifles are bad and Pyramyd Air is sending me a box to ship it back to them,at no cost.Ya cant beat that with a stick!!.I may add that the companys people are VERY helpfull and courtuis.Send a order and they ship same day.I couldnt be more happer with the service and the attention to detail they have given me.Thanks everyone,at Pyramyd Air.Panman.

Are you getting a refund, or is the rifle's sear being replaced?  They have dis-continued the SamYang for now.

Steve

They shoot soft lead .45Colt/.45-70 stuff (no jacketed bullets), or the appropriate diameter roundball.

If you go back further in this thread there is more info on bigbore air rifles.

I'd love to see some honest penetration testing done on these guns and with several different types of bullets?

butcher would .45cal muzzeloader sabot pellets work in in a bigbore airgun? But they were not cheap they were almost 85cents per pellet.Would they work like the ultra velocity sabots that RWS put out for the .177 and .22 cals.I heard acuracy is decreased due to higher velocitys.

I have not tried them personally, as I see no real advantage using a sabot round in a bigbore airgun.  Others have reported that they don't work so well.
