HOW DO YOU GUYS FEEL ABOUT THE 500SW AS FAR AS A DEER OR BRUSH GUN, COMPARED TO
MAYBE 450 MARLIN OR 45-70

Welcome to GBO:

I prefer the 45-70 to them...I hand load so I can load it anyway I like...

PS...Please don't type in all capitol letters...turn off the cap lock button...

sorry about the caps. didn't mean to offend anyone.
i i feel that the 45/70 is ahead, because of the many over the counter loads.
the 450 has only one load or that is all i have found.
i think i will go with the 45/70
i have a sb2/synthetic stock, 280 rem, that i have not shot yet
have found a 450 marlin and a 500 s&w barrel, but not a 45/70

Hello Rex6666, Welcome to the sight and the wonderful world of Handi-holics.
I would Not have 450 Marlin doubt every have 50 S&W, Now a 45-70 is
hoot to shoot, real easy to reload how you want.  Best of luck to you
 Marv.

I am an occasional shooter and and I hunt deer and coyotes.  That said I like the 500 although I am the first to admit that bullets and brass is easier to get for the 45-70.  I have a 500 S&W and a 38-55 and I would like to get a 45-70 to fill the gap at some point.  I will probably shoot my 500 about 100-150 rounds this year....the 100 pieces of brass I have will last a long time at that rate and I have enough bullets to last 4 or 5 years.  I have great fun letting my family shoot a 700 grain lead bullet out of a 50 caliber.  Thrilling is not the word they use to describe the experience.  The 500 is as easy to reload as any straight wall cartridge and is a lot of fun, while being slightly unique to own. Chances are there will not be one next to you at the range. Good luck and good shooting.

OK you guys have convinced me. now the hunt is on for a 45/70 barrel or maybe gun.
want ejector barrel though, that is just me.
this HANDI rifle sickness is very contagious.
like the idea of being able to just change a barrel and have a new gun.

But it doesn't seem limited to having ONE gun to change barrels on.  You need multiple guns for the extra barrels.

I am interested in the 500 because it's ballisticaly very close to the old 50/70 round, one of the buffalo killers of its day. It's true that modern hand loaded 45/70 outperforms it in some ways, but it will hurl a heavy slug and will take deer easily. I can imagine having a lot of fun with a 50.

Heh heh, probably the same thinking behind my having a 405 WInchester, 3 45-70s, a 45-120, plus a 500S&W, all H&Rs, he's a  Handiholic Big Bore fan, plain and simple!! ;D  And what does "Need" have to do with it!!! :D

That doesn't hold water when talking about big bores, I had four .458s before I had a dozen H&Rs, the ratio of big bores to smaller bores isn't a rational thing, specially for a dyed in the wool Handiholic!! ;D
