SKS for coyotes?
« on: April 18, 2007, 10:43:19 AM »
We've got lots of coyotes around where I live.  I've already lost 2 chickens, and my neighbor is worried about his dogs so we went and got licenses to hunt them nearby.  I'm trying to find a decent rifle within my means and a guy at work is selling his yugo SKS.  What are your thoughts on using the SKS to shoot predators on the property and also do a little hunting for bobcats and coyotes when I get the chance?

The SKS is by no means a long range rifle but for what you need it would be an excellent choice if you are talking ranges of 100 to 150 yards.

My opinion,

Because I now call coyotes from time to time and was taught by a very knowledgeable person.  I recommend a scoped bolt action .223 with bi-pod at the minimum.  I own a Russian sks which is suppose to be the best of the bunch and does group well.  It just doesn't have the accuracy that is required.  Scoped or not.  It is not a good coyote gun, not saying that it won't work for the first couple of coyotes but they get smart fast and will hang up out past the effective range/accuracy of an sks.

I think it would great fun for just wanderin' about takin' potshots at targets of opportunity. If you're gonna try callin' 'yotes though you can't afford to miss, they won't be fooled twice.
If you're just tryin' to protect your stock, get a red wolf bitch, cross her with a grey/shepard mix, keep three of the cubs, one alpha, one beta and one omega. Sell off the rest. When they grow up in your care, they think you're part of the pack, and will not allow 'yotes anywhere near your place. There are no more lovin', intelligent critters. I'm sure glad we learned that, even if it was an accident. If they ain't colored right to pass 'em off as German Shepard mixes call 'em Aussie Shepard mixes, or Husky or Malamute mixs for veterinary/license purposes.
We can hear the 'yotes makin' the rounds at night stirrin' up the neighborhood dogs, but we don't ever get to see 'em.  ;)

The SKS will work OK if you can call them in close enough-100-150 yards.  Kill those coyotes.

Don't get me wrong, I really like those old SKS's ....BUT.
When I take the time to sit and call a Yodle Dog, I want something I can
be assured of a hit the first shot. SKS's are not tack drivers nor were they designed to be.

Think CHEAP .30/30 almost...

Sks has the power, almost of a .30/30 WCF. Certainly kill a dog, but you got to hit them.
#2). Sks was made to be battle reliable. To keep shooting even if a bit dirty and neglected. In brief, not to put them all in one hole at any range. If you are not too concerned about having a dead 'yote and a pelt with each shot, it would be fine for harassing them. If you want them dead for certain... fair to poor. If you are that serious, then you should probably look into trapping (or contact the government trapper USDA/ADCS). Trap is a lot more certain than someone who isn't hunting full time all the time with that level of skill. luck.

If you're just tryin' to protect your stock, get a red wolf bitch, cross her with a grey/shepard mix,

The Association of American Veterinarians doesn't agree with that. The information they have gathered on fatal dog attacks shows that wolf/dog hybrids are one of the crossbreeds most likely to kill someone---even the owner. Only pit bulls are more dangerous. There are far safer ways to deal with coyotes.

I wish you'd tell that to the mailman and the UPS, Fed Ex and DHL drivers. Maybe they'd stop deliverin' all that stuff my wife orders on the Jewelry Channel.   ::)
