I agree, since my desire for a 45/70 was born here and since we all know how expensive it is to feed and dress one of those, I think i should ask for barrel support.

Ironglow, this is a lot of fun, but in all seriousness you don't have to use all these expensive or fancy bullets to have fun, even the cheapo 300gr and 405gr Remingtons or properly sized bulk cast bullet will shoot well, just go for it!! ;)

Ironglow...Folks really don't need a reason to own a 45-70...it's just natural now...the ones that don't, just keep make excuses cause they haven't got around to getting 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 of them........ They are fun in all flavors from the mild...to the wild...get a couple and you'll see what everyone means.. :D :D

  Guys;

   I just knew there must be a reason why I just gave my old .44 mag "Shikari" to my #3 grandson...

    If the deer down in my woods could hear me now..talking 45/70..they would already be "packing their bags" for the other side of the county....LOL

Tim,

That is a sweet looking bullet. Ironglow, any bullet can be fun out of the 45/70, I am cheap, I cast all my own so I can shoot bunches of them. Last summer I used almost 200 pounds of lead just casting bullets for my 45/70, shot them all too. I have no idea how much powder I used as I went through a couple of pounds of FFg every weekend that I shot.

But every one is right, the 45/70 can be lots of fun, you can make mouse loads or you can load it up to stop a bull moose. If you don't get it you will kick yourself in the backside later!

OK OK I have to ask...  what is it that makes the 45/70 so special compared to all of the other handi rifles. I mean I have shot the 350 and 405 grain factory loads before (not a handi but a lever action marlin) and I ended up bleeding. Not alot of fun lol needless to say. I can only imagine the punishment you must get from a Handi. I mean they are so heavy. ... I would not be able to cast to many bullets because i would end up using the lead to fill the cavity I drill out in the butt stock. I know I know  I am allready dreaming up a forend that would be able to accept enough lead to balance it out     ;D    seriously though what is the deal.....   i still love my 25-06 great shooter   better that me .

Well...simply because they are so much fun to shoot and exceedingly accurate..and they make great big holes in whatever they go into :D :D.Sure you have to add lead to the stock to shoot heavy loads...I do that all the time anyway with them...and I also add a good recoil pad...and a soft cheek piece to mine...Why not be comfortable when shooting ehh.... ;) Someone else tried to add weight to the forearm and busted the screw stud off of it I believe..so I would be careful doing that...

If things go right at the auction I am attending this weekend I will be the proud owner of a "new to me" 45/70 too. They sound like a lot of fun to shoot.

my two cents,

Factory trapdoor loads have about the same recoil as a 180gr 30-06, and that's the beauty of the 45-70, as Mac said, you can get loads for it from mild to wild, from the 405gr Rem or 300gr Rem, Win or Fed loads which have a bit more recoil, but are still very tolerable just over the 30-06's recoil, or step up to healthy levergun loads from Buffalo Bore and Garrett.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

If you handload, you can load reduced level loads and cast bullets that make it a plinker with cast bullets from 180gr on up to 555gr. The list below is factory ammo compiled in December 2003 by Coyote Hunter, some is no longer available like the PMC, and prices have gone up, but the factory ammo selection is extensive.

You'll find that the H&R 45-70s, either the Handi or the BC, is one, if not the most accurate out of the box H&R available, if I were ever to decide to thin my collection, the 45-70s would be among the last to go, IF ever!! ;)

DANGER ,WILL ROBINSON!!!
Pay no attention to those other guys. They will lead you down the path of no return.Look at my case. When I came to this forum I only had a 30-30 Handi. Now I have three 45/70's.a Handi,a Buffalo Classic and as of this past week end a Marlin Model 1895.
45/70 shooting is about as much fun as you can legally have fully clothed.
