BP pistol load question.
« on: May 20, 2003, 06:08:34 PM »
My first session with my Encore 209X50 pistol went fairly well, but left my a little confused. (well a little more than normal  )
After I got the scope to stop rolling in those Trashco rings, things came together. I was on target had good groups. I shot out about 20 240 gr Rem JHP bullets (much like an XTP) When I ran out I switched to a Lead swagged Elmer Keith type SWC (240 gr) well after three or four I figured out they were tumbeling soon after exiting the barrel. they held together fine just flew like crap. I was saboting both bullets with Harvester sabots.
I then went to an XTP 200gr (all I had on hand) and was back on target. I'd like to shoot lead SWC 's instead of senting the more expensive XTP's down range @ bowling pins and the like. Hey, I'm a former gunnut turned bowhunter. Always wanted a Contender! could'nt resist an Encore. Rock on pistolaros.

I can give you lots of possible explanations, I only shoot round ball with my blackpowder stuff, but I don't think it's the blackpowder specifically that's causing the problem. As long as the twist of the barrel will support the bullet choice, are you sure the bullets were tumbling? I would think it more likely either they were cast poorly or the charge behind them was less than optimum. I know with round ball if you get a dent or hollow spot they will not fly correct. If  you didn't cast them yourself, lot of times the "bags of bullets" from a gun show will have lots of flaws. Too much or too lilttle powder and the bullets don't stabilize properly. Might want to check the cast bullet and bullet swagging forums on this site, they might have specifics or history on your problem. Never heard of saboting a SWC, but then I've never put a sabot in my BP so I probably wasn't listening.
