I find the mil+spec has set me back so far around $650.00
$599.00 for the gun the rest in tiny upgrades
I think before I decide what I want and how much is it going cost.
You are right to buy a plain Jane G.I> and then do all the upgrades that is insane :you might as well my the gun completed
and one m7st know his limitations not to get into over his head:I like to play with things always have been good with my hands
reading is a so,so but you name it I done it

I agree with you guys on the cost comparison. If your going to buy a low budget one, then start to upgrade it, you may as well just buy one with the factory bells 'n whistles already installed. Cause in the end, the cost is pretty comparable.

The reason I did what I did is two years ago I walked into Gander Mt. and the Mil-Spec was sitting in the counter for $350. I swear it didn't have more than 100 rounds thru it!!

I went to Gander to buy a turkey decoy (which they were out of) and came back with a 1911. I still think the gun manager screwed up and priced it wrong. But....whatever.

I just fitted the commander grip safety and combat hammer:I had to remove about 20 thousands off the side of the grip safety.
I also installed a new combat hammer ;I tested the safety seem to work excellent there was no need to adjust the sear leaf at all.
I am now going to slow rust brown the grip safety and then dunk into boiling distilled water should be blue/black when finished

LW,

Post a pic of the outcome. I like to see how projects like these turn out. It gives you some great satisfaction when it looks good and you did it yourself.

BACK VIEW
I am not great when it comes to files I like using the lazy man dremel: But I thought the dremel will screw up the grip safety I have some knife sharpening stones made by LANSKY and with some honing oil must of took me a good 1 hour to fit the grip safety;
The part that came off the colt was rust brown and slightly pitted I seem to use 150 grit on a dremel and some hand labor to remove the pitted surface
Like you opinion on hot the grip fits

LW,

From what I can see the fit looks good. It looks like you have a few file marks to clean up, unless that's just the pic flash....it's hard to tell without a close up. But the fit looks good. Put a quality finish on it and it will look very nice on the gun.

LW....very nice!!! Looks like you bot it from a store. What product did you use for the "slow rust" that you speak of?

I installed the new chip McCormick sear to day and man what a difference with the sear and new hammer.
I have to say the new sear is light night and day from what SA uses in there guns:I now have a trigger that breaks 46 oz I did nothing to the leaf spring just a new trigger, sear, hammer, and the new grip safety the colt commander:
I would say it passed all safety functions and a range test will be the judge but I think it will do excellent.
I also ordered a new thumb safety but the old fit excellent

Looks really nice!! Where did you get the fancy schmancy finger grove gizmo's on the front grip? I'm guessin that fits under the grips? I kinda like that. My Gold Cup has that type of grip and it's a very comfortable grip.

yep they go under the wood grips I think you have better control with them :
I think midway had them for 9.00 bucks
Now if all goes well at the range the gun is finished

LW,
Do you plan to change the sights? A nice set of Novaks would give it a finished look.  Good job on that Springer!!

I like the sights has the 3 dot white combat sight that I can see without my glasses
I think it will do a lot better now at the range as far as target work .I will see, the trigger breaks now at 46 oz seem nice when dry firing it with a dummy round in the chamber.
I did notice a tad of creep I can feel when the sear is going to break, but for now I want to put some rounds threw and see if it correct itself.
I did polish the new sear with 1500 wet and dry paper and machine oil, but it not easy seem the alloy is a lot harder then the stock sear that Springfield uses in there parts.

I loaded up some winchester 231 in the 45 1911 and have to say it has a edge over unique powder as far as tight groups.
I loaded 5.4 of 231 and 200 grain SWC and just blew the 10 x out of the target at 15 yards two hand hold unsupported.
My other load is 5.1 unique another excellent load for target but have to give the edge to 231 powder

upgrade time again been reading that the above pin stop when hand fitted will reduce recoil and twist in the 45 after the shot.I was told a 5/64 bevel has to filed in to the non bevel straight edge on the pin stop.I give it a shot and report back and see if it really works

did fit the new pin stop all now is polish and blue I think it is ready to go: I tested it seem the disconector was scraping a little under the pin stop underside I removed a little more metal from the bottom: I would have to say the bevel or radius cut on the over size pin stop works the hammer without problems I hate to remove to much some say 1/2 the radius of 5/64 or .045 will see how it  works at the range before removing any more from the pin stop

I was out shooting today found the slide starting to stick a little?
I have a little over 1000 rounds threw the mil spec 1911 and never had any problem's installed a new pin stop last week from EGR and tested last week with a 100 rounds no problem.
I just added a new set of slim grips and thought I would like to see how the thinner grips feel must of went threw 50 rounds no problem then it seem to start:I load my clip 5 rounds only and after the last shot I remove the mag: and walk the slide down just the last 1/16" I felt the slide stick not all the time but I new it did not feel right.
I shot another 50 rounds no problems but when I got home I did decide to field strip and clean and did notice the slide need a little more then just slide of the frame.
I strip the slide and frame and reassembled the slide to the frame I did notice as soon as the slide did meet the EJECTOR on the frame seem it started to stick did notice the ejector had a bare spot were the blue wore off otherwise it look O.K. not bent I had some J@B bore paste and added some to the ejector and after working the slide by hand my problems were gone.
I cleaned a reassembled rack the slide to the forward position and no problems anyone have any idea why it started to stick?
I forgot to mention I clean my gun after every time out at the range

Do you oil the slide contacts up with a quality oil? I always oil up the slide contacts (rails) and put a few drops in the barrel lugs before I drop the barrel in the slide.

soft steel in the ejector peened a little and got wider at the front. On the area that was blue-worn...dress it with a stone and I will keep an eye on it seem fine now.
I use  Remington Teflon oil on the slide
