Update on 1450 Bombard

After a bit of time passed, I received my finished tube.

Beautiful workmanship.  It is so pretty, I am having second thoughts about browning it. 

It should throw a 36" diameter stone at least 2000 yards, as I figure it ...

OK, would you believe a golfball. ;D

The work was done by Jamie Cartmill who, if you wish to avail yourself of her superb machining skills can be contacted at jamie_32_3@hotmail.com.

In any event, the next step is to proceed with the carriage.

BTW, since the tradition was to name cannon after women, this cannon shall be known as "Jamie" from now on. ;D

We ended up with 4140.  I am sort of rethinking the carriage that the Royal Armouries associated with it, there are some that are simpler.  If you have any thoughts on that score please share.

If you don't brown it, it will brown itself unless you polish it after every firing.

Steel wants to be brown. Steel wants to rust.

When you brown a barrel, at first it tends to look artificial. As time passes, the colors change and it starts to really look awesome.

For what it is worth, after you have done several layers of browning, and rinsed it well, boiled linseed oil is a good and traditional coating to put on the barrel.

Very nice.  I take it you got the plans from the Royal Armouries. 

I am about to start the carriage.  How did you go about carving out the depression to support the tube?

This is a bit different on the actual gun, but a pretty nice carraige. I think these guys are out of Switzerland.

Hey Rickk,

Na, its not brazed to carriage. Dom brazed it to steel lips, each lip has two holes drilled so it can be secured onto the carriage. So barrel can be removed for maintenance.

I didn't give more details On the Bombard, Its all steel Built for me by Dominick Carpenter. As you probably can tell its a Golfball size bore with powder chamber.really looking forward your Bombards completion.

No problem.  I am going to take a shot (ha!) at reproducing the carriage in the Royal Armouries plan in wood.  I might make some simpifications to the specs based on the materials at hand. 
I am still in the process of assembling the bits and pieces but should start on it next week.
