New hunters

 Gave a hunters safety course Friday and Saturday and awarded certificates to 27 new hunters , We always have a few who have never handeld or fired a gun before and as a first time shooter the instructors start them out with a Handy, When parents ask about a first gun for their youngsters the Handys always seem to get the nod  for  safety ,quality,and price. Many of the parents who hunt always tell us that their first guns were the H&R'S .and always want to share  a fond memory or two of first hunts with their fathers and family members. It looks like Handy's will remain a favorite with people who lenjoy the shooting sports for a long time to come.

Well done , getting the next gen. ready for the field , This shows one thing that is lacking in Ohios hunter ed. program , no hands on with the guns , just a 2 night class and a test .

I have been thinking about getting my cert. for Ohio and getting one of the local ranges to let us do some live fire just to let them get a chance to shoot .

One local range has a program were kids under 17 can come to shoot with the club guns and ammo for free , but we need more of this type of thing .

I agree with you Stimpy we don't have enough programs for kids in Ohio to get them into the shooting sports.

Go for it Rich. The kids need you and so do the rest of us!

I taught Hunter Saftey and Firearms Safety in Canada a few years back. After those inane gun laws they passed in the 90's I got so p'offed that I figured one of the best ways to chip away at idiocy of them was to help youngsters get some idea about what responsible firearms use looked like.

And like Flint I often used my Handis (we did have hands on training at a range). And I have to tell ya, I had some of the best experiences of being a shooter/hunter in those days - helping those youngsters.

Heck, I think that part of the purpose of my life is to help the youngsters now that I have all these years this experience under my belt  ;)

I agree. I don't think most kids today get a chance to learn how to shoot a gun. I was raised around them which included learning safety, how to shoot, etc.  Most people today I talk to are scared to let there kids near guns of any sort. I work at a bank and a lot of people ask what I do for a hobby or with free time. I tell them I like to shoot and they look at my like I have another eye in the middle of my head. Even when I was in boy scouts they were reluctant to let us shoot a .22lr at the range because of insurance risks. I think more classes that actually let people handle and fire weapons would be a great idea.

Here  in NY they promote some hands on range experience. Shooting is not required to take the test , but we as instructors do recommend it. Everyone under the age of 18 must get parental permission to handle the guns with live ammunition but that isn't a problem as we provide a form for the parents signature. NY even provides us with ammunition in. 22cal and 20 ga.  BUT  . we have to provide the guns ,which we are more than happy to do. It really is a good feeling to pass on the hunting tradition to the next generation ,and hopefully they Will be safe and responsible hunters because of the efforts of all the instructors all across the country.

My daughter took the hunters safety course in PA last month (I took it with her too, lost my card years ago). They don't use real gun in PA due to the law suit fear. They were given disabled redriders & wooded toy guns to check their safe handling skills. My first gun was a H&R topper 12 guage full choke. Took alot of rabbits. I feel they teach a very important skill "MAKE YOUR FIRST SHOT COUNT". Most likely won't have time for the second one & even so, hurts too much to shoot 2 times fast.  :o
My first deer hunting experience was with a Springfield 1903A3, was a loaner from a friends dad. What an experience it was. H&R is nice & light & teaches all the important skills.
Oh, by the way she got a 96% on test.

WELL DONE, my son got his this past fall but has been handling fire arms for the last 4 years. When we went through his class of the 43 people there 30 were under 15 good to see
