I am helpless- what bases go on Marlin 925
« on: April 22, 2007, 09:19:17 AM »
The Marlin 925 is drilled and tapped AND has the dovetail.  I don't trust the dovetail mounts.  If I am offbase then someone let me know, I have never used them.

Marlin has a set of bases to use for $10.  Does anyone make bases for these rifles?  I find it hard to believe that no one makes them.  I looked at Weaver's chart and it says "this rifle has dovetail mounts" or something to that effect.  I would prefer the Weaver mount for durability and removability.

If anyone happens to know then please let me in on the secret.  I can't find a number anywhere.

I use Weaver #12 bases on each of my Mod 25's, front and rear.  Just used a set last weekend on a buddy's Mod 925M to mount a Bushnell 3X9X40.

The Weaver chart lists the #12 base for the Marlin Mod 80, 81 and 980.  www.weaver-mounts.com

  ;)

Edited to change the model number of my buddy's rifle to 925M.

Thanks, man.  The Midway website showed the #12 for the 980 and 80, but no bases listed for 925.  I figured that I was missing something there.

The last marlin I bought  came with the bases but I just used the dovetail..
It sits the Scope lower on the barrel doing it that way.. I have never found
dovetail mounting to be any less stable or accurate..

It depends on the quality of the rings you use.  I have seen real cheap sheet metal rings that wouldn't hold still on dovetail mounts.  Get quality rings no matter what mounting system you use and you won't regret it.

I have a Bushnell Legend 5-15 with AO.  The objective is about 52mm OD.  So I would need rings that are at least 14mm high right?  (52mm-25mm tube/2)

14mm is just over half an inch.  The Midway chart, Weaver chart, whoever it is, showing .270 for the ring height.  I am guessing that that allows for the height of a base.  So..........if I just get Burris Signature rings for a dovetail then I need High rings at .793?  The Medium is only .444.  That is a heck of a height increase.

If anyone is still with me here, I am a) cheap, b) getting my first rimfire, and c) just trying to figure it out.
