7.62 x 39 Contender barrel?
« on: May 21, 2003, 07:57:41 AM »
I was thinking (painfully) about subsonic loads in 7.62x39 and was wondering if anyone has ever made barrels for the Contender.  Ideally I'd like a 10", 12" or 14" bull barrel to buy used.  Any experience or ideas?
If I have seen further, it is because I have stood on the heads of Giants - Sir Isaac Newton

YEP, THERE BE SUCH A THING, I'VE GOT ONE MADE BY EA BROWN & CO.. ACTUALLY IS A 7.62 X 39, BORE DIA IS .308, MATCH GRADE SHILEN BARREL, 15in LENGTH.  IS REALLY ABOUT THE SAME AS THE 30 HERRITT. HAVE NOTED NO GREAT PROBLEMS, CASE NATURALLY HAS MORE TAPER THAN HERRITT WHICH I WOULD ASSUME MIGHT CREATE MORE BACK THRUST.(ACCORDING TO SOME EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED BY PO AKLEY) BUT THAN AGAIN WHAT WOULD THAT OLD MAN KNOW. :-)

from what I have read the 7.62X39 is less powerful than the 30 30 win.  not buy much. I don't see where the 7.62X39 in a contender would be a problem. never mined the 7.62X39 is a 50,000 cup cartrage with a 120 grain bullet noless. should have looked before I leeped.

The problem is the hard tapered case...

We've bounced this one around a lot on here.  The 30-30 has a straighter walled case, the hard taper on the 7.62 gives it too much pressure on the breech.  It certainly would work fine for someone who reloads.  I have seen them a few times on E-Bay, but they have been pretty spendy.  I sure would like to have one.
....make it count

:D Had a 16 " from Bullberry sold it in a fit of stupidity to a friend. I just have to catch him in that same frame of mind and I'll have it back. norm
