35 remington in a Marlin to 35 whelen can it be done.

Can a  marlin 35 remington be converted to the 35 whelen. put one on hold at a local shop.  Newer model marlin with the saftey and the top is drilled and tapped.  For the price I couldn't pass it up $175.  If it can't be converted its gonna get a red dot in the scout position.  Just curious.

NO Way Jose. You could however send it off to SSK Industries www.sskindustries.com a long time GBO Sponsor and have it turned into the .356 Winchester which will run right on the heels of the Whelan. But you can't make a Whelan out of it. The round is WAY too long to fit into the Marlin action and those pointy nose bullets aren't intended for the tube feed magazine of the Marlin.

The .35 Rem is really quite adequate on it's own but for some reason I sure do want me one converted to .356 Winchester and I have one sitting here that I picked up just for that purpose that I've not yet sent off to JD to have it done. I've even stocked up on .356 Win. cases for the project.

The .35 Remington is a cartridge that performs all out of proportion to its ballistics.  In the Marlin 336, it is about as close to perfect a combination as you will find.  If you insist on having a .35 Whelen in a lever action, the place to start would be a BLR long action.  The cost of converting the Marlin to another caliber would probably make a good down payment on one, and then you would have two guns to play with.  I still regret passing up on a pre-Microgroove Marlin in .35 Remington, with half magazine, for $150 because I thought it was too much money.

I guess I am wondering what the advantage is to the scout setup for a red dot?

I shot one with the scout base and found it to be slightly easier to get on target with both eyes open then my old 30-30 with the standard base and reddot.. That and I have a cabelas gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

Don't feel alone Kieth, I never understood Cooper's Scout rifle concept in the first place  ???
A carbine with the scope half way down the weapon never made any sense...
Shooting one in bright light conditions pretty much negates the use of the scope for me..

Everyone has to do what works for them.  Most red dots are built with zero magnification, and are made to shoot with both eyes open anyway.  I haven't seen one mounted scout style, but I would think that they are hard to see thru half way down the barrel.  I can see a pistol scope mounted far away, but not a red dot.  But then again I haven't tried one yet.
