WILL POWER, WILL POWER, will power, will pow...
« on: April 24, 2007, 10:53:34 AM »
I've been pretty strong up until now. I've got a 45-70 Handi that I've set up to my liking, camo lam straight stock, steel trigger guard etc.
Then I started thinking that I'd like to get a 22 hornet barrel so that I could shoot the same gun and just have fun with it (I've always wanted a 22 hornet), but from a practical and economic standpoint a 223 would be a better option.
Cruisin' the classifieds last week I found a 22 hornet and a 223 in the same ad. DILEMMA! The only reasonable thing to do was to buy them both and sort it out later. Sounds simple enough...
Then I end up shopping with my wife at the local Wally World, I naturally gravitated to the gun counter and while perusing the gun rack I spot a Handi 270 with a laminated pallet wood stock and schnabel style forearm. I don't want a 270, but I think it might be a nice set up for the 223. DILEMMA!
I could probably sell the 270 barrel and somehow justify this insanity. Right?
Now I already know what you guys will say and I already know what my wife's gonna say...
Pray for me.

You're right on track Dave, don't fight it, there's no point, you're hopelessly afflicted now, as Stimpy said, all you can do is treat the symptoms and yield to the addiction!! ;D

Dave I know just how you feel!!!!!!!!!!! I got it pretty bad myself. Last week I bought a 243 barrel a 204 fluted barrel (which came today) and a 30-06 Handi Rifle. Good luck to you.

;D You did jump on them. And they will be in the mail tomorrow. Hopefully you will receive them by weekend. They are good shooters, and I am sure they will serve you well too.
It's hard fighting the urge, even if you know very well that you might not have no reason in He!! to own and reload the caliber.....the temptation is always there. Ever wonder why they chamber so many practical calibers? 8) I have a 280 / 204 combo on layaway and have no actual need for them. But I am hooked as well, and am willing to give a little :-X ;D

Thanks guys, I'm still thinking about it. I think I'll wait and see how the new barrels work out on the current frame, I'm still a little apprehensive about barrel fitting...  Right now I'm hoping for a good fit or a little too tight, shimming scares the crap out of me. We'll see.

You think it is bad now?  Wait until you think you are in good shape and then you decide you want something just alittle different.  Like the 445 or 357 max or Tim and Mac's 338-06.  Just when you think you have convinced yourself you are done, it will bite you, so hang on and enjoy the ride.

Oh, a 30-40 Krag is already in the "I'm somehow gonna do it" stage. I'm considering that 270 just for the wood and receiver, the barrel would be sold or traded to help with that project  ;).

Dave

The 30/30 to 30/40 is an easy convert , Wayne will probably do it for around $100 to $125 maybe less on a 30/30 barrel .

I think if you rent a reamer for 30-40, you can do it yourself, Then a 44 mag
ejector, I think it would be easier to modify. Just my 2 cents. It is not all that
hard to ream a camber. Marv.

Dave, after you receive the 2 barrels take them to the store along with a phillips screwdriver, tell the clerk if the barrels you have fit that receiver you will buy it, within 1 minute you will know, if they fit, or at least ONE of your new barrels fits the frame WELL as is, I suggest you buy the gun and sell the .270 barrel. I do suggest you check first to see if the gun is a leftover with an ejector barrel (yeah!!!) or a extractor barrel (   :() before you decide. It will be easier to sell an ejector barrel, but even an extractor barrel should sell here among we addicted Handiholics. Make up your own mind about if you want an extractor barrel or not since you will be the one using it. Best of luck and let us know what happens....<><....:)

Roudy, that's how this insanity started, (check my first post on this thread).

 I don't need or want a 270. I don't need another rifle, I'll have a 45-70/22 Hornet combo (or will have shortly).

Andy, I'm going to get the hornet barrel fitted to the same receiver as my 45-70 and get a similar sight combo so that I can shoot the same gun for plinking or serious hunting. I don't have enough sight adjustment to shoot wimpy loads out of the 45-70 and I've always wanted a 22 Hornet, a match made in Handi heaven.

If the 223 barrel fits I'll set it up with the same sight combo. I have a good friend that has loaded "lots" of 223 ammo and has offered me a few thousand rounds to play with. If it doesn't fit... watch the classifieds.

Truth is, I just want to buy that rifle for the stock and forearm. That ain't right, but I'll probably do it anyway  ;D.
