What about the 280 ?
« on: April 24, 2007, 01:13:11 PM »
I am seriously thinking of getting a 280 barrel. Do you guys know of any problems with this round in the Handi? Do you like them? How do yours shoot? Any info would be great. Thanks Dale.

I have 2, a standard and a 19" shorty, no problems and they shoot great. I think most if not all of the .280 H&R's shoot great....<><....:)

I tell ya, in comparison to the Ol' -06 the 280 is a great candidate for the most versatile chamber offered in a Handi. Plus it's bonus of a 26" barrel coming standard really bumps up the vote.
7mm bullets have some excellent BC's and can really shine in the handloaders ...umm...hands ;D

I love my .280.  It shoots the inexpensive Remington ammo well enough that I haven't even begun to roll my own ammo yet.  Mine is scoped with a 3-9x40 Simmons Pro Hunter and I can easily shoot 1-1/4" groups with 140gr. Core-lokts which is plenty good enough for a meat gun.  I've got other guns for punching holes in paper.

Hey guys is the 280 that much better than the 06. Is it worth having a 06 & 280. I know the more calibers the better. But  it seems kinda redundant to me.  Dale you just got your 06 didnt ya? Just thinking out loud. You want another barrel go with a 45/70
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

Yea I know what you are saying. I am also going to get a 25-06. The 45-70 is also on my short list on account of everything I have heard about them here.

Personally...I think if you get 2 good ones..you can see a heck of a difference between the o6' & the 280..Granted..the 280 is a Hand loaders dream with all the different 7mm high BC bullets available...but so too is the 30-o6 when it comes right down to it..and the availability of tons of factory offerings truly makes the 30-o6 more practical to someone who doesn't reload..or orders lots of ammo on-line and just goes into B&M stores to purchase it...If you do load for each...take a look at the BC & SD of the 150 gr.7mm Combined Technologies Ballistic Silvertip..and the same for the 308 cal 165 grainer...Very similar values..and velocities...but the o6 achieves this in a shorter barrel..and will shoot flatter at 300 yards and beyond..It will have a bit more recoil..but not enough to really amount to much...and the real heavy weight bullets usually work real well with it...you can ask Sourdough about this round..he knows it real well... ;) The 280 is a great round..and I like it a-lot..but in my book..will never surpass what the o6' can do..so...I say get them both and shoot the heck out of them...there is way more than enough differences between the 2 rounds to justify having both...IMHO
