I need "the brew" for Varmints in .243 Handis( modified)
« on: April 25, 2007, 02:37:08 PM »
I've found myself "stuck" with the likes of 3 fairly popular Handi barrels, all in .243.  I have the 24" Ultra Varmint Fluted , 24" Ultra BB and the 22" Partner BB. I'm sure, by now, you guys have cooked up some pretty good brews...mind sharing? I'm ready to load. And I'm particularly interested in any brews that work well with all 3 barrels........is it possible? For now lets just concentrate on Varmint loads...I have plenty of other calibers for the bigger targets....

Thanks,
Ken

Ken I have a 243 NOT NEF, but my best load is 85 gr. HPBT Sierra bullet.
Good dose of IMR 4320, Near max load By Sierra's Manuel.  Bout the only
I can tell you. Surely some body with 243 handi's can come in with some
good info. Best of Luck.  Marv.

Thanks Marv....I think I have a about 80 of those....but no 4320 so guess I'll see what else gets offered...if a Handi guy shows up with a simular load, I'll buy some.

What are you shooting? Whats the twist?

42.0gr H414  90.0gr Nosler BT. Shoots great in my Ruger#1.

1-10" twist under 1/2" with three shots. H414 is good in several of my rifles.

It works reallty well in my Handi 257 Roberts.

Thanks Fred! I have a cupful of H414 that I saved for SOMETHING...now I know what to do with it....

I can't believe I haven't heard from all the Handihaulics yet tho....I thought these barrels to be the "flagship" .243s....
Where's are the great recipes?

I've tried a couple loads with lighter bullets in my 24" BB, no luck yet, but it does shoot the Fusion 85gr and Power-shok 100gr real well in factory ammo.....FWIW. ;)

Tim...

Does anybody else have all 3 barrels? I'd bet they have a brew that works in all of 'em...
I'll try the Fusions since I don't have to load for it....
I'd imagine I'll get a recipe or two before its over...just looking for a good place to start.

THANKS  Tim!

I'm not aware of anyone that has all 3 barrels, that doesn't mean there isn't, just that I don't remember them!! :D I only have the one, thought  about a fluted, but that's as far as I got with it!!

My Ultra varmint liked Reloader 22 and the Combined Technologies 95 grain Siver ballistic tips...mine was a max load and seated .003" off the lands ..mitchell has it now.. and the 55 grain Silver ballistic tips are 1 holers for him.

I'm not 100% sure what powder he was using..it could have been BL-C2 or H4895...or H380...The Reloader 22 was what I was using with the 95 grainers

yup....I could live with that... ;D  Mac, I know you aren't a big fan of the fluteds, but any reason to believe this mix wouldn't do well in all three Handi barrels? Tim? Mitchell?

Anything is possible...A lot of elbow grease went into that barrel..and a lot of care went into the ammo...both mine & mitchells...so..give it a shot ;) :D :D...No..it wasn't improved at all

The 95gr...that should be good with a whitetail/muley? Did you hunt with this mix or just paper?

A load that worked well in my handi plus 3 other (non-NEF/H&R) 243's was 45 gr H4350 and a 75gr v-max, at 2.625" in federal brass with a CCI 200.

hello...i had a few thought's & hope to see further input on this thread...i wound up with a 243 handi...it doesn't like 85-87 grainer's using h4350-4064-varget...it seem's i have heard the 243 is a tad finicky ?? "hopefully" the 243 boy's will come out of the woodwork...

The best load that i have found for my 243 Super Lite is 34.5gr of IMR4895 under a Speer 100gr BTHP . Even with this picky sucker i can keep 5 rounds under 1" @ 100 . have yet to try anything lighter .

As previously stated the .243 is tricky at best but after several hundred rounds I stumbled on 44.5 grains of IMR 4831 behind a 75 grain v max 2.64 col. This will shoot dime size groups with my .243. Good luck, TVC15
