Just got my first handi
« on: April 28, 2007, 01:40:20 AM »
The gun show finally came to town again, I traded a Taurus 38spl. revolver for a new handi. It has a .204 ruger bbl, blue, and wood stock. In keeping with the affordability aspect of the handi I put a western field 4x scope on it. I got the scope free from an old friend, it is new old stock still in the box. I think it is a nice little low dollar set-up. I plan on taking it out to the range today and have some fun. It has been awhile since I have had a shooter like this and I am looking forward to working up loads ect. Any advice, or comments  form anyone are welcome.

Congrats on the new 204. It's a fun little caliber, and might just impress you.
You might have difficulty seeing the full accuracy potential for the cartridge and your handloads with such a low power scope.
I have to admit I have never seen someone put a 4X on a 204 yet...but to each his own ;D
Have fun, and I look forward to hearing how she shoots for ya.

When you get a chance pick up a Bushnell Banner in 3x9 , you can find then sometimes as low as $65 or the Barska in 6x24 , around the same , either will make a world of diffrence . the 4x will work better than nothing but will not bring it to full potential .

Those little bullet holes are hard to see on paper .  ;D

No dought about the 4x scope. I will be looking for something with more magnification. As for how it shot...about how everyone here said it would. Not bad for the scope and shooter. Looking forward to working with it and seeing it get better. Thanks for all the advice.

It will get better as you shoot too , once the barrel gets broke in and smoothed out you will notice your groups getting smaller and smaller .

I agree, and I believe the 204 is one of the better barrels NEF/H&R puts out right now.
Mine liked the factory Hornady 32gr V-Max loads real well. Another barrel I look forward to loading for in the future.

I just picked up 2 boxes of 204 Winchester super x 34 grain JHP. It says on the box inproved accuracy Lubalox coated. Does anyone know anything about this type of coating and if it helps? If it ever stops raining I hope to get to the range tomorrow.

You mean the Winchester Supreme Silver Tips? These are CT bullets offered by Nosler.  Very good bullets, and the Lubalox is slick. I learned fast..and from Mac no less ;D... if you shoot these bullets, do so from a very clean bore and do not shoot copper bullets before of between shots when using these. Then you will see the best results from them.
I look forward to seeing how they do in the 204 for you, as this is the first I have seen they offered them in 204. Please keep us updated.

I just got my .204 barrel and I am very happy with it. I got a Bariska 6X24 scope on sale from Midway for $56 and it works well. My first hand loads did a nice 7/8 inch 5 shot group (or 1/2" if we discount the flier).
