STI makes a fine pistol, no ifs ands or butts. You also have the option of a wide body if you like double-stacks - I don't.
Another option would be to have one of your Colts built into a bullseye pistol. Or just buy a good used anything, and have it built. You should come in under budget, if you shop wisely.

where would a fella from upstate ny procure one of these sti weapons?honestly i have never heard of them.what kind of warranty comes with it?how's their service after the sale?i was at gander mt in plattsburgh ny over the weekend, they have a nice selection of kimbers from $800 to $1300.i assume the sti comes in around that price range.the two colts i own are not really good candidates, one is a lightweight combat commander the other is a colt defender.in other words i have small and medium, want large andaccurate.i,m goingtodo some research on those sti,s.thanks, adker

If accuracy is what you want from a production pistol, The Kimber Gold Match would be hard to beat in that price range!

Dan Wesson Pointman 7 is a great handgun and you will have money left over for ammo. I shoot a friend's DW 45acp, I own a DW Commander sized 10mm, and they are both top shelf. See this report:http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ga_handguns/dwesson_101106/ Regards, Richard ;D

ive also got a gold match kimber and a colt gold cup both fine guns but in the case of the kimber a little more then the 1000 you want to spend. You can get a new gold cup trophy for about that but the gold cup national match again is more then a 1000 bucks There all fine guns but the money youd save on the sti would buy you quite a bit of ammo and its every bit the gun the other two are.

I have two STI's, both Trojans. One is in a .45 cal. and the other was a 9MM that Dawson punched out too a 9x23.
I am comfortable that STI makes as good and accurate of a pistol as one can find from a production gun.

I agree. Ive got a trojan in 9mm and its about the most accurate and reliable 1911 that ive ever owned. The gun is fitted up tight and the slide feels likes it runs on ball bearings. Ive seen 1911s that cost twice as much that werent fitted as well as that one.

well,i really appreciate the info you guys gave me.that sti is a real nice lookin piece, but they didn't seem to be too available in my area.one of the shops i deal with called me today to let me know they had gotten something in i might be interested in.to make a long story short i ended up with another colt.a gold cup national match this time.price was right, gun had been to the custom shop for accurizing, real clean gun shows very little use,i fired 107 rounds thru it after i got home shoots great, functions better.here is a pick of my colt 45 trilogy.thanks again,i may still look into one of those sti's in a 6" barrel, don't have one of those yet.adker

I'll toss in a suggestion for the Dan Wessons too.  You also might look at Sigarms GSR series.

Congrats on the Gold Cup.  You made a great choice.  I have a lot of respect for Colts, especially ones that have visited their Custom Shop.

I was about to chime in on the STI's.  Nice pistols, but I do not view them as highly reliable based on my experience in USPSA competition.  Nearly every match, one or two would break...extractors, sights, firing pins, etc.  Granted these were high use race guns, but I've used Colts, Springfields, and Para Ords for years and years with out mechanical problems in matches.

cant vouch for all of them but my trojan has WELL over 50000 trouble free rounds through it and the only thing that has been replaced is springs and the absolute only malfunctions the gun has ever had were because of a bad reload that i myself messed up.
