Finally Bought Me A 17 HMR
« on: April 28, 2007, 12:57:02 PM »
Well after deliberating for a while, i finally broke down and purchased me a new 17 HMR, it is the Savage 93R17 with camo stock and accu trigger, haven't had a chance to shoot the gun yet but i bought a box of Federal v-shok 17 grain v-max poly tips to start out with, hopefully tomorrow i will be able to take it out and shoot it and see how it does

If you scope it, it will probably amaze you with the accuracy

It'll take several hundred rounds for the rifle to shoot it's best........

Well i put 30 rounds thru the Savage 17 today, was really surprised by the power of this little round, i was shooting the 17 grain vmax poly tip federal premium, gun seemed to shoot pretty tight, think I'm gonna see if the 20 grainers shoot better, I'm gonna have to really get use to this rifle, it sure is different .

Some savages seem to like 17gr rounds, while others prefer the 20's...
have you tried both?
Has it been fully broken in?

Why not mail order?
I usually find ammo is about $1.50 per box cheaper mail order vs. what my local shop sells it for--and then you can get ANYTHING you want.

I wouldn't scrap your savage until you've tried different ammo--guns can be picky, that's why reloaders spend countless hours fine tuning their loads in centerfires/handguns....no two guns act quite the same. Case in point, I have a .223 that on a good day will shoot hole-in-hole at 100yds, but only using 55gr boat-tails. If I got to a lighter bullet my groups open up to over 1.5"
I've heard a lot of people on rimfirecentral say their savages shoot much better with the 20 grainers.

I have a buddy with a synthetic/sporter barrel/non-accutrigger savage HMR and it does every bit as well as my heavy barreled marlin/wood stock...both are SUB-MOA rifles. The ONLY thing I dislike about the savage is the VERY cheap feeling stock--but I've never been a fan of synthetics anyway.

Three-08, you love the potential this little round has... I love my HMR, it's one of two rifles I ALWAYS take out.
It's also my favorite farm gun--gotta ward off those SCARY barn pigeons somehow  ;)

mine will shoot like dime size groups at 50 yards but i want it to do that at a 100 and it just wont do it its not a tack driver, i would like to see a target at a 100 yards some of u are calling tack drivers, mine at best on a calm day at a 100 might be a inch to a inch and a half and it should shoot better that the i would think
1 shot 1 kill

This is about the best I've ever done, usually have a flyer. I've never shot it at 50yds, always 100yds.

No, it's a CZ452 American, the Sportster and Marlins shoot almost as good, but not quite. ;)

My Savage shoots great! it is the finest shooting rifle (and least expensive) that I own. I shot two groundhogs in Pa last weekend. both at around 100 yards. Both called head shots. One, I aimed at the eye, and guess what?? It took it right through the eye! Of course, I was shooting off of a rest, and there was little wind, but I cannot find a better shooting rifle for the money, or more fun caliber for every day shooting.

My Marlin shoots V-max better than TNT - however both are in a 50 cent piece at 100 with very light wind - wind comes up and accuracy decreases. Perfect 80-120 yard rifle - however at twenty cents a pop I use 22 LR whenever plink'in at 80 yards and under.
