Do these bullets look like any molds you've seen?
« on: April 28, 2007, 06:12:49 PM »
I bought these for my 38-55 H&R and it loves them.  They are sized .379 to .380, which is what I need.  The short one is 245gr and the long one is 335gr.  I'd like a mold for the 245gr one.  Any one see a mold like this?

Handirifle,

I have seen that 245gr before, and I want to say it looks like a copy of a LBT, but not sure. Veral would know that answer, the other one looks like an older Lyman design 378674. But with out a real good close up of it that is as closes as I can come.

Thanks Greg, what is an LBT?  The longer one looks like it's just starting to keyhole at 50yds, which isn't totally suprising with a 1-18 twist, so a 300gr version might be better.

LBT is Lead Bullet Technology, http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/lbt/molds.htm look at the Long Flat Nose Series about  halfway down the page. I am betting that is what the lighter one is. Veral is the person that makes them, I personally do not have one of his molds, but the people I know who do have them love them. I will get myself one when ever I can scrape the money together, he has a couple I would really like to have.

Thanks Greg, will have to see about getting some of theirs and comparing accuracy.  If it's as good or better, I'll have to get the mold and learn to cast I suppose.

Just so I don't waste them, I'm taking a few of the 335gr bullets and modifying them.  I cut the bottom base off them to make them shorter and lighter.  The "new" base is thinner, so it may not hold up to the pressure, but it's worth a try.  The modified bullets weigh 285gr and are 1/4" shorter.

It took out the base and a grease groove.  We'll see how they hold up soon.
