Factory vs aftermarket barrel
« on: April 28, 2007, 06:24:08 PM »
Is getting an after market barrel, better than the factory barrel?  I have G22c and was wondering if my groups would improve or not.

Waco,
Couldn't gurantee that an aftermarket barrel will improve your groups, although it frequently does. Most of us use aftermarket barrels because we shoot lead reloads, and the better case head support found in aftermarket barrels.  Having shot a lot of issue 22s, I'd have to say that it couldn't hurt the accuracy. Don't know if Lone Wolff makes a ported barrel for the 22, but you might want to try one of the standard unported models. They are a good value for the money.

Trigger control, grip, stance. That is where your groups are.

I shoot Glocks in 4 different calibers.

In addition to what GSD17 says, my experience shows that some guns/calibers/loads are more accurate than others.  My 2nd gen G21 will put one bullet in on top of another (my reloads) out to about 10yds if I haven't had too much caffeine.  ;D    I have not seen where aftermarket bbls were any more accurate, but being most have tighter chambers, they don't swell the brass as much.  If you don't have to work the brass excessively during the reloading process, it'll likely last thru more reloadings.

Exactly! 90% of us aren't capable of holding well enough to take advantage of the inherent  accuracy of our pistols. I really happy to shoot under 4" groups with my Glocks (25yds). Changing barrels, or anything else for that matter, is not going to make a Glock into a target pistol. If you're changing the barrel for the tighter chamber/better case support, or lead capability, it's worth it. Otherwise spend your money on ammo and practice.

I recently picked up a Glock 22 and planned on getting an after-market barrel, mostly because I planned to shoot reloads. I have since backed off from that idea. 1st off I usually load plated bullets(berrys) & am a relatively low volume shooter & clean afterwards. I also closely compared chamber case support with my H&K USP 40 & on this new generation Glock I saw very little if any less support. My plinking/target reloads are right in the mid to low-mid range with Hodgdon Universal. For these reasons I plan to stick with the factory barrel. I agree with the others about group improvement expectations with an aftermarket barrel.

For some reason a .40 S&W (Model 22) has a different type recoil then a 9, 45, etc. I've never liked the .40 that much because of it. Its easy to used to a .40 if that's all you shoot, but going back to it from a 9, 45 etc. can throw you off a little. The after market barrel isn't going to make that much of a difference in My opinion.

I have a bar sto in both a 19 and a 35 that My wife and I use for IDPA  and IPSC/USPSA matches. The barrel change did make them shoot groups a  little tighter, but they all ready shot good before the change. The reason I swapped the factory barrels out was due to using mostly lead handloads.
