« on: April 29, 2007, 02:26:39 PM »
Went out on a limb and bought some Varget to load some .243. I got plenty of 85 grain pills, thought That would be a good match. What do ya think?  TVC15

yeah, it's a great powder for .243. my .243 liked 95 grain ballistic tips (Nosler) and 33.5 grains of varget, as well as a 60-grain sierra hollowpoint with 40.5 grains of varget.

it's a browning a-bolt. not sure what the twist is but you could probably look it up or call browning.

Or you could test your barrel with a really tight patch and measure the distance for one full turn of the rod.

It looks like I will be using less powder than the 4831 or 4350 that I am used to. Is that due to the fact that varget burns faster??  TVC15

Yes.  You will need less of a faster powder to match the velocity/pressure of a slower powder.  Less powder translates into less recoil given the same velocity and bullet.  Slower powders may fill the case better than faster ones, but what really matters is how the powder shoots in your rifle - not some theory quoted in the gun mags.
