Got my 22 Hornet barrel today
« on: April 30, 2007, 11:38:10 AM »
Got the 22 Hornet barrel from myarmor today, thanks Aaron. The barrel locks up good and tight with just a little side to side play without the forearm. With the forearm attached there is absolutely no play. The barrel meets up to the receiver good and tight. I slipped a thin piece of note paper in between and closed the barrel and could not remove the paper, with or without the forearm attached and made sure the paper was just above the ejector (about mid chamber).
Sound safe enough to shoot? Thanks,

Good for you David. I just got and tried a 204 barrel. It fit up great also but if you are like me you will be nervous the frist time you pull the trigger. Happy shooting Dale.

Dave,
Some years ago I had a 22 hornet Handi and at the time I was enjoying 22 rimfire silhouette shooting.  I had made a set of silhouette targets from 1/4 inch steel and they were a hoot to shoot.

I decided to try using the 22 hornet on the metal boar at 100 yards.  After a couple shots I didn't see the target swinging and couldn't hear the 'ding' that the 22 LR made when it hit the metal.  I did notice a couple white spots on the black paint though.  When I walked downrange to look at the targets I found that the hornet bullet had plowed right through that 1/4 inch mild steel boar!  Yup, nice little 22 caliber holes!

While the Hornet may be a small center fire cartridge it does carry some power.  Hope you enjoy yours.

Dave, paper will be anywhere between .0025" and .004" thick, try a piece of aluminum foil, it's much thinner, ~.0005"-.001" thick. Any looseness with the forend off will most likely affect accuracy, but it's not gonna hurt anything other than accuracy. ;)

First off, your welcome and thank you for helping me out as well.
I know you will have fun with it.
If in doubt of safety, I fit it till it locks up. Then hold the barrel and tip of the butt stock- where the action fits up to it- and then press underneath the receiver against my knee to see if it opens. You will usually find out pretty quick if you have enough latch engagement.  But from the sounds of it, I would go out and fire it as it sounds like it fits pretty good, even though you might have a little side to side, if it's not too much, you can fix it by either shimming the forearm or use some epoxy to permanently fit the forearm spacer to the forearm. Given of course it's a wooden one.

I look forward to hearing how she shoots for you. I didn't have much time to play with it as my other project took priority.

Well, I shot 15 rounds through it this morning. No problems. The groups were all about 2" @ 50yds. Not bad for shooting off a bag with factory open sights. 3 for 3 on clay pigeons offhand @ 50. Ordered a Williams FP for it this AM. What fun  ;D.
