Is the 22" bbl on the 45-70 too short ?

I've already placed an order and it's probably too late to change. How does the 22" bbl affect rifle balance, ballistics etc.

It's an Ok length, but you can always change your order, give em a call if you please!! An even better choice is to ADD a 32" BC barrel, then you have the best of both worlds, and you can always shorten the 32" barrel to a more manageable length, 26-28" is perfect IMO. Just remember that the BC barrel comes with no sights, but is D&Td for a scope rail and has the dovetail cut for the front sight.

Never had any trouble with mine.  I think Marlin makes a lever gun as short as 18 1/2 or 20 or something like that.

Nice to carry cause it is short, wish it was longer when holding offhand.

No. I've had 45-70s in 18.5, 20, 22, 24, and 32 inch. I think 22 to 24 is as good as a compromise you can come up with. Enough length to provide good smokeless ballistics but short enought to be "Handi" in the bush.

That length has never hindered my 45-70 Handi. I think it is a perfect woods rifle. I have seen black bears and deer taken with the same gun in Maine and it has never failed to perform admirably....<><....:)

I find my 22" 45-70 is very handi.  (pun intended)

Are you sure about that, Tim?  Their website says it's DT for rear sights, not DT for scope rail.  If I could get one with a scope rail, that would be a way cool solution to my barrelless SB2 receiver!  I wonder what that would do to a pronghorn at 400 yards, though.

ALL H&R rifle barrels come drilled and tapped for a scope rail, the BC rear sight, which is a Williams WGRS, uses the two rear scope mount holes. Pic of my scoped BC below.

I killed a deer with my 45-70 22" barrel at 225 yards and it is handy to carry too!
