new mini-14

Anyone got one of the new mini-14's. How accurate is yours? I just bought one and my inital impression was very good. Shot it with the open sights so could not really tell how good the group was but now I mounted a scope and will try it asap.  ;D Byron

I own two. Bought the first one just over a year ago. The model is the synthetic stainless 580. It has about 1,200 rounds through it. The rifle has a decent trigger and is capable of 2-3 MOA with Wolf 55 grain FMJ. It weights under 7 lbs with a 10 shot clip installed and carries and handles great. Sort of a super M1 carbine in my book. It has become my trail rifle, supplanting the heavier and older Mini-30 (189 series I own) I used to carry. I liked the 580 so much I bought a wood stocked stainless version last fall. This has a perfect two stage trigger and is surprisingly accurate. It is heavier and about 3/8 to 1/2 inch longer than the synthetic stocked 580 rifle. It shoots 1.5 to 2 MOA with Wolf 62 grain HP. I like the new sights and the picture they present for target shooting and rough field use the protected rear and blade front are good. For hunting, the new sights could offer quicker target acquisition, as is the problem for this peep and blade front with protective wings set up IMO. This is not a slam against the Ruger, as any rifle with this sight set up (M1 Garand, M14, Carbine, FN-FAL, etc) has the same target acquisition problem on snap shots in poor or mottled lighting as I see it. As I do not use this as a hunting firearm I like and endorse these sights for my intended use of these rifles, that is, offhand target shooting at 200 yards and 300 meters and as trail rifles. If I wanted to hunt with the rifle I would get a bead front sight like they use on the Deerfield.

I mounted a Mueller 3 - 10 x 44 Tac II.I am very pleased with scope and rifle.Took to range Sunday and ran about 500 rounds thru it.It never missed a beat.Could put most in the 10 ring at 104 yrds.Scope and rifle shots super as long as I do my job.Know one thing I've got to get into loading room and run some more out.I bought 12 boxes of Remy UMC at Wal mart for a little over 6 bucks a box.Only 12 cuz that was all they had ;D...........Rick

I'm thinking about getting a new mini-14.  I haven't quite decided which model or anything.  How much does it usually cost for ammo in the .223?

Irs (like the nick ::)) At Walmart here you can get them a little over 6 bucks per box.I can load them for????? Never figured it up.The cheapest at Wally World was the Remy UMC.They work fine in my mini,as do my loads.Wolf is cheaper,if you can find it.I noticed a lot of the .223 brands are out of stock.Probably cuz of the war and lot of the rounds being bought up.I have several 1,000 rounds and I buy more when I come across them. But it a fairly cheap round to use...........Rick

I bought my first mini-14 over the weekend.  I shot it a little with some monarch 55gr softpoints.  Accuracy was a little disappointing, but I did not expect this to be a target rifle.  Besides, I'm just getting starting.  I'll be trying lots of stuff.

Did you get the new model with the tuner on the end of the barrel?

No, this is a regular model.  It is the stainless, composite stock model.  I really like it.  It's fun to shoot.  I think over time I'll get some kind of trigger job, and maybe try some of the accurizing tricks.
It shot the first 5 fairly well, considering the gun. Then the group started opening up quite a bit.  One shot went about 6 inches high. This was at 25 yards!
It came with a 5 round clip.
I plan to get a couple of larger capacity clips.  I saw some at Midway.  Are they any good?

If you are shooting for accuracy you need plenty of time for cooling between each shot.
