Using wedding candle lighter for cannon?
« on: May 05, 2007, 06:58:50 AM »
I hope this is a good idea. Would a candle lighter used for weddings be good for lighting off quill? I know, from using them in weddings that the wick lasts a pretty good while. It looks good, and it has the cool slider thing to make it longer or shorter. They might be pretty easy to find cheap on eBay

Or, would the flame get blown out by the quill and primer?

Just an idea.

I've never seen one, but if if would hold nitrated string it probably would work. You don't need a flame, just a glowing ember. move the linstock in from the front so that when the piece recoiils the gases go behind it.

I used these in a church that I worked in and they use such a small wick I don't think they would work very well. However I did make a similar gadget out of copper tubing and it works quite well with slow match.

Oh well. I thought it might save someone the trouble of looking for a linstock or working one up. If it did work, you could change the firing instructions a little.

Add some lines, like--
"We are gathered together here today to witness the firing of Bubba's cannon."
Sing -- "Here comes the charge, all dressed in foil."
"Who gives this powder charge away in un-holey aluminum foil?"
"Do you have the lighter? Place the lighter on Bubba's hand."
"With this lighter, I thee fire!"
"You may now FIRE the cannon!"

I've thought about this too much, apparently.

Amen!

An unsolicited Amen! ;D    It's not even Sunday!

I went to a cannon and mortar match today... my first one. I went just to watch and wound up being the vent guy on a field cannon... punch the bag and put the quickmatch in.

Anyway, the thing they used to hold the slowmatch was nothing but a wooden stick with a sharp metal pointy thing on one end to stick into the ground. The other end just had a hole drilled thru it that they threaded the slowmatch thru. It worked well.

There were 6 guns, including a rifled parriot, and one mortar. All but one were using cotton string impregnated with BP (Blackmatch) for ignition. One team was using the scotch tape with BP stuck to it rolled up and slid inside a paper straw that has been recommended on here a couple times. I was impressed with how well the scotch tape worked.... seemed easy to ignite and burned way faster than blackmatch
