.270 WSM or .270 Weatherby?

Anybody have any opinions about which of these is the best?

I have opinions but since I've shot neither, take them for what they're worth.

First of all, I'm not a huge enthusiast of .270 caliber cartridges.  If I were looking for a big game rifle, I'd go fore something bigger like a 7mm and for small game I would choose something smaller.  In my opinion, for the game it's meant for, a 270 Winchester would work as well as the 270 WSM and 270WM.  I'm aware that this is just personal bias.  Jack O'Connor not withstanding, I could do without .270 caliber firearms of any description.

As for the 270 WSM vs 270 WM question; I see no reason for the 270 WSM in the first place but brass for it might be cheaper than brass for the 270 WM.  Guns for the 270 WSM are also probably also cheaper than the Weatherbys.  On the other hand, the 270 WM has been around for a lot longer than the 270 WSM so at least if has some enduring power and it would be my choice between the two.

I've been playing around with a Mark V in .270 Roy since last Fall.  (I received the rifle as a wonderful gift!)  The rifle came with the full, fancy stock, highly polished, blued barreled action etc.  Mind you, I can't imagine purchasing one of these shiny raskals (I've since restocked it with a McMillan synthetic) but MAN, does that rifle shoot!  If I told you some of the 3 shot/100 yard groups that gun has printed, I'd be heckled off the site.

Generally speaking, I'm a fan of the standard cartridges (like the .270).  I'm personally convinced that modern projectiles and powders make these standard cartridges more capable than ever.  I'm just writing to say that my experience leads me to believe that the .270 Roy is much more than a "pretty face".

270 has always been my favorite........until the 270 WSM  arrived. Very accurate and very flat shooting. Highly recommended!  Have a 300WSM too....another great one!

I've had both the .270WCF and a .270WBY.  On paper the large case looks much better, but in the field the difference is slight.   The WCF has plenty of power for deer out to over 300 yards and the drop and drift figures are not substantially different than the big cases.  But that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the big cases as long as we remember there is no magic involved.

Hunting rifle accuracy is dependent upon barrel and ammo quality, not some exotic case shape.  With no Winchester rifles being made for the .270WSM, and an uncertain future for the round, I'd choose the WBY.  But that means shelling out more $$$.  I currently have a .257 AccuMark and it will be the last rifle I would ever sell - if I ever have to.

270 WSM by a mile.
Rifles are available in all price ranges, brass and ammo is cheaper, as Lone Star said there is little real world difference between it and the Wby Mag.
Of all of the WSMs the 270 seems to represent the real contribution to the market.
And if you offered to buy me a rifle and asked me to choose a modern cartridge for regular hunting the 270 WSM would be my pick.
Mind you if you offered to buy me a new rifle for regular hunting in any chambering my answer would be different.

I have a 270 WSM and in all honesty, I didn't buy it for the caliber,
I bought it because it fit me perfectly ! I load it to about the same velocity as a 270 Win.
I normally hunt with a .30-30 but one of the pieces of property I hunt on offers some shots that are out of the reach of my old trusty .30-30.. The model 70 fills the gap quite well.
As far as the weatherby, I have never owned one and doubt I ever will. Too many other perfectly suitable weapons out there that cost much less..

Don't know about those two but I picked up a 270win Howa 1500 at our local gunshow last year and it is a tack driver for sure.The price was $350 for the rifle,scope,case and a sling.The setup looked brand new with no nicks or scratchs anywhere.Great Gun.

Yessiree Bob, the 0.007" difference between the .277 bullet in the .270 and the .284 bullet in the 7mm makes all the difference.  Sarcasm off/

Why of course that extra 7 thou is important!
Afterall, Paul Mauser thought it was a good number.
