Ruger P95 DPR
« on: May 07, 2007, 04:26:53 AM »
Hi,

A local gun store has a P 95 on sale for a great price.  I have been looking for something to leave at home with the little woman when I am away on business.  What bad things have you heard about this gun.  I have not read anything detrimental about this gun.  I have a 10-22, if it is anything like that it will be a great value and simple to maintain and operate, reliable, sturdy, and accurate.  The other gun I have been considering is a Beretta 92.  How does the Ruger compare to the model 92?  Am I trying to compare apples and oranges?

Thanks for you help

Steve

You'll be much happier with the Beretta. The P95 is a very blocky feeling gun. Hold both in your hand and you will see what I mean.

I personally like the Ruger much better. The Beretta is a large pistol. I have one of the first P-95's and it is absolutely dependable. Have never had a malfunction of any kind and I have original and aftermarket magazines. You can't go wrong with either, but I would choose the Ruger everytime.

I only picked the Beretta because you only gave two choices. If you really want a good feeling pistol check out a Springfield XD,especially in 45 ACP. The Ruger is reliable but is one of the butt ugliest guns on the market. The Beretta is a large pistol, but so are most guns that hold 15+ rounds. Go to a gun store and hold several different makes and models, I'm sure you won't come back with a Ruger P95.

I borrowed a friends sig and went to a local indoor shooting range, while their I also rented a 9mm XD.  The XD was the better gun by far.  The sig felt kind of rough: I think this was because it needed more break in time.  However I know nothing of sigs.
Your right, if it weren't for the difference in price the XD is the best gun that I have held.  The gun is for home protection for my girlfriend when I am on the road for work.  We went to a local gun store and looked at the Beretta, Ruger and XD.  The XD is my personal favorite.  I also like how the Ruger fit in my hand.  However she favored the Beretta.

I know that the beretta is the US Military side arm, however Ruger has a reputation for building simple reliable guns.  I am not really concerned with looks, it has to function when I need it to and be accurate.

For the sake of an argument, how does the model 92 and an XD compare against each other?  I am a bit biasedtowardd the XD after shooting one though.

Thanks for all the help guys,

Steve

of all the guns mentioned id take a sig hands down followed closely by the berretta and id give the ruger and the xd a toss up but would take the ruger due to the cost. Personally i dont understand all the hoopla about the xds. I think there blocky tanks and the ones i shot were even all that reliable and were very ammo sensitive. The rugers though not the most accurate guns on earth (at least not in 9mm) are very reliable and feed anything. overall quality its a sig all the way. Theres only one black gun made the impresses me more and thats an h&k. In my opinion (though its not worth much) springfield did a superb job in one aspect of there xds. That would be marketing. They got everyone convinced that you can buy sig glock or h&k quality for half the price but in reality you get half the gun!

Steve,
Without trying to push another pistol off on you, let me just answer your question directly.
The P-95 Rugers are a lot of gun for the money and will serve well in your application. I bought one for my wife back in the early 90s. She liked the big blocky slide. She has limited hand strength, and could cycle the action by grabbing hold of that big wide slide. She ended up with a smaller gun for her carry, and the Ruger was relegated to loaner status in IDPA. I lost count of the number of rounds thru that gun, in the hands of a couple dozen individuals. It has never failed to operate as advertised. What can I say, multiple shooters, and a variety of cheap ammo, zero failures. Sounds like a bargin to me!!

I have a P95, most accurate centerfire I have owned or shot. Had an XD 40, sold it, have shot my buddy's XD45 Tactical, Taurus PT1911,, have a Glock 22,S&W M&P 45, Ruger P90 and P345. P95 is the most accurate of them all......

Lloyd I agree with 99% of the time, but can't on the XD issue. I shoot IPSC with a XD45 and it has never failed with anything I've put through it, and believe me I've put some rounds downrange. We also have a Grandmaster in production class that shoots an XD in 9mm, and there's no telling how many thousands of rounds he's shot through it .The XD's are no joke, a lot of gun for the money.

You need to have her hold it before you think about buying it.   The Ruger P95's/89's have a large grip, if her hand was too small, she might not even be able to pull the trigger that well.  A smaller framed sig might be just the ticket if looking for the woman.

john i well could be that after fooling with a few that werent that great that ive developed some predudices against them. I completely hate bfrs too after my experience with them but alot of guys really like them. You have to keep in mind when reading any of these posts that your reading on mans opionion. Everybodys is different. Everyones idea of what feels good in the hand varys. I can be a poster thats rough on people and guns. I post what i experience and dont brag my guns up to justify having them. I will be the first one to tell you that my gun is junk and the first one to brag up something that does work for me even it it goes against the grain of everyone else. I have to admit to aquireing some predudices against them the first time a looked at and held one. I think there big blocky ugly and just dont sit right in my hands. But then nothing much other then a single action a smith or a 1911 does.

Lloyd, don't get me wrong, I'm a died in the wool 1911 guy. I shot IPSC with one for 10 years and have had one form or another for the last twenty. When I picked up that XD45 I was very impressed with how they got 13 rounds in the mag. I was even more impressed when I started shooting it. I'm pretty much a classic gun guy (Smiths, Pythons, Hi-powers ,1911s, SAA's) but I have to admit to being impressed with the XD. I have roughly 4000 rounds through the gun with all types of ammmo and 0 malfunctions. The gun works. Different guns feel different to different people. The XD has the same grip angle as the 1911. :)

John if everyone had the same taste as me in handguns it would be a pretty boring world. Also would make it tough to get good deals on the guns some guys dont like!

Thanks for the input guys.  Well, it looks like another trip to the gun store is in order.  And darn it we have to look at guns again.  What a shame. ;)
Seriously though, thanks for your opinions.  The added info helps to make a smart choice.  Regarding the Ruger, it was gun neither of us really considered when we were looking originally.  It is just on a good sale that makes it worthwhile to look into further.

Rugers are excellent guns for the money..................the XD40  I had was a good pistol, but mine rusted easily and I diodn't like it's looks so I kept the Glock 22 40 instead, and it's my least favorite of my pistols..........

All XD's now come with a Melonite finish. After a couple thousand draws, mine shows no wear at all. The XD 40's used to just have a matte finish on them, and it wore off very easily. Your right Lloyd, it would be hard to get a good deal if everybody liked the same guns. :)

I have the Ruger P95 and after putting hundreds of rounds through it with even the cheap stuff I never have had a jam. Although not as accurate as my Browning hi-power it is the pistol I rely upon for self defense. It is built like a tank.

That is one good thing about the rugers... they are shooters, everyone can agree on that.  I can hit a pop can every time at 50yards if im resting on something.  But it is a heavy gun for the light 9mm, which helps with accuracy.
