handi takes coyotes
« on: May 07, 2007, 05:53:12 PM »
i killed two coyotes today while planting corn, i shot the first one at about 7:00 am this morning, the 2nd one was about dark tonight, shot both off my tractor while planting corn, 1st one was about 60 yds , 2nd coyote was a good 150-160 yards, shot both with a old 30-06 handi rifle i had for years it rough with a old bushnell 3x9 scope, this old gun is tough it i leave it on the tractor year round, it gets covered with dust, mud, rain, and strill shoots good, i lost it one time for about month, found it in the side of the pond spill way, cleaned it up inside and out had to put a new scope on it and has killed many deer, just a good ole tuff rifle. it has rust and pits on barrel the wood is beat up bad, it has alot of duck-tape on it.

I like your hunting gear, but isn't a tractor a bit expensive for hunting coyotes? ;D

Where do you live?  I am interested in learning more about coyote habitat, since the story about the Quiznos in Chicago.  I grew up in AZ, and always believed they preferred a desert or chaparral type habitat (maybe because of the roadrunner cartoons, he was never after bugs bunny).  But some say they will live anywhere except wolf habitat.

Also, did you inspect the kills?  Was there much difference at impact with a .30-06 between 60 and 150 yards?

coyotes will do well anywhere. I grew up in southwest Okla. where ran them with greyhounds on wheat pasture in the winter. they have a problem here in the Dallas/FT. Worth area on the golf courses, the catch and eat peoples dogs (slow rabbits) Bobcats are catching on to the city life also.

I don't know what makes me happier knowing that there are two less yotes running around or to hear that your handi is reliable and takes a beating and keeps on shooting strait!

ro...good to hear that ol'e beat up handi work's for you...being the denning season you probably killed more than two coyote's ??? you know what i mean ?? "however" if coyote's are a problem for your farm operation i don't blame you a bit....i sometime's think we get hung up on bench accuracy so much we forget about pointing & shooting....sometime's 2" rifle's somehow kill thing's...

A good story from a tried and trued Handi owner. Nothing wrong with the abuse and straight up use of a rifle in question. Simple and straight, and I am proud to hear from another farmer that has had honest use of a Handi or Pardner shotgun. I know my relatives continue to tell me stories about the 32" "long tom" Topper ;D nailing turkeys at ungodly distances :o 8)

If you want to get jiggy with that '06, Remington makes a cartridge called the Accelerator, which is a 55g bullet inside a sabot, which leaves the muzzle at 4200 or something like that.  I'm pretty sure you can just buy the sabots and do similar hand loads.

I'd think twice about playin that game, there are those that are no longer members here that should have thought about it. ;)

   RO,
Is there any way you can post a picture of your Handi? A good honest working gun is a thing of beauty.
