Cast Bullets in SKS?
« on: May 08, 2007, 08:58:33 AM »
It appears that SKS bores vary in diameter to as large as .312, yet most bullets cataloged are .310".

Has anyone tried cast bullets in their SKS?

Is the Pope a Catholic?

Lyman's 311359 and Lee's C312-155-2R are two currently available moulds that cast very good bullets for the SKS.  Several powders wok well but I use 4895 with the Lee bullets and H4227 with the Lyman.  My Russian SKS really likes the Lee at 1850 fps.  There are several heavier moulds that cast .311-.312 bullets but seating them deep into the case to fit the magazine hasn't provided the accuracy that the Lee bullet gives. The Lee bullet was designed for the 7.62x39.

I use Reloader#7 in mine. I lube the gas pistons with ATF and clean and re-oil after shooting. While the Lee bullet will cast out undersize for some of my bores, I will seat and size the gascheck to .001" or so over bore size. I use straight wheel weight lead in the bullets and get acceptable accuracy in oversized bores (at least as good as the steel cased stuff)

Been doing it for years. Slug your bore, Then cast to size of bore. I all ways go over 1 to 2 thousands. Lower powder  load  and have fun finding the correct one for your rifle. Remember because of the difference in rifling, each one is different to get best accuracy. Mike in Ohio and loving it
