Taming Frontier's recoil and muzzle blast
« on: May 08, 2007, 06:12:47 PM »
I have a .300 WSM Frontier on order and even with the short barrel reduced ballistics will be getting 30-06 level velocities according to Gunblast's review.  My question is: How much can I expect a muzzle brake to help if the recoil and blast is just too crazy for me.  I like everything else about the concept and the chambering but have heard fearsome tales of what to expect when it goes bang.

Thanks in advance

When you buy a rifle, that is designed to be quick handling, with a short barrel, light weight and a Mag cartridge, you're gonna pay the price for it. Kinda like physics...for every action, there's a reaction. Lite weight + mag cartridge = recoil. Short barrel + Mag cartridge =muzzle blast.

If you add a compensator/muzzle brake, you'll be increaing the noise level even more. A good recoil pad ,like a Sims or Kickeze may help some with the recoil.

If you're having second thoughts, after just ordering it, contact your dealer and back out of it. There are lots of other choiices out there that might not be as brutal.

Second the opinion of hunting with dogs. Go with a 308 or a 7/08. Make up the difference with quality bullet construction.

I'd also say that if you're worried now you'll only carry that worry over to the range and that will effect your shooting performance.  There's other, more user friendly chamberings in that model that'll be just as capable and provide easier ammo locating.     Ordering and then worrying is kinda putting the cart before the horse.

It should drop noticed recoil down to fairly close to a 243 Win or so. I have had a 10 year old shooting my 300 win mag
