There is a .500 S&W Handi on the rack at the local Gander Mtn. I was surprised to see the cheap-looking plastic sights you describe -- it seems like NEF buys sights from a lot of different suppliers. Both of my open-sighted NEFs have good Williams rear sights. One came with a good Firesight-type front, the other (the .357 barrel) came with a cheap metal blade, which I replaced with a Marble's Uni-ramp. I have replaced the muzzleloader's rear with a Williams WGRS aperture sight. That's a very good option for quick aiming, particularly if your eyesight is no longer what it was, as is the case with me.
