Full Scale Dahlgren Carriage
« on: May 11, 2007, 02:40:49 PM »
Here are a few pictures of a Dahlgren carriage I just built.  The customer has an original 9" barrel and he made templates from an original 8" carriage.  I can build a carriage like this or to scale for anyone who is interested.  dwc414@hotmail.com

I agree with "EL Cazador 66". WOW! That's some piece of metal. ;D

On a side note: Dom, I tried to go to your website the other day and it did not come up. Is the site down or have you relocated it?

That's a little more than what I'll toss into MY 1/2-ton pick'emup truck and take to the 100 yard range!

Downtown, that's different - I WANT THAT parking spot!   ;D

Thanks for the compliments, I will post pictures when it is completed with the barrel.    The steel is 7/8" thick and the carriage weighs about a 1000 lbs. The  water-jet program is on file and in a few minutes it can be scaled to any size.  I will in the next month or so machine a scaled barrel and build a smaller version.  Maybe a micro, or maybe larger.  Depends on my schedule. Stay tuned.  intoodeep,  I'm looking into the website problem you're the second person who informed me of a problem.  I have no trouble going on it, so I have to look into it.  I also have to update it. It's outdated, although the prices are still current.  Thanks, Dom

Dom,

Thanks for letting me know. The link I used was from the "supplies" section here.

It is http://blackpowder-cannons.com/index.htm

Anyway, keep up the Great work! I think I may have a project in the back of my mind for ya. I just need to take the time and do the drawings.

Dom,
Great looking carriage.  Here are some photos of a full size Dahlgren cannon on it's new carriage, along with a before.  This is one of a pair that were on the USS Hartford.  They are located at Trinity College in Hartford CT.  They were last fired about 15 years ago.  I did not build the carriages, just helped out in the planning stages.  Good luck with your project.

I am totally in awe at the concept of being able to cut 7/8 inch steel with a water jet. Dom, how thick is too thick ?

When a waterjet cuts through thick material, the cut has draft (an angle) on its sides.  The thicker the material, the greater the difference from one side to the other.

Rickk, It depends on the horsepower of the water jet.  I'm not sure of what the highest capacity machine will cut in steel, but this machine will cut 1-1/2" thick in steel.  It has a thicker cutting range in other materials.  George is right about the kerf on the cut pieces, but the cutting head can be programed to point to the waste side of the material resulting in a straight edge.  We ran it at a slower cutting speed which gave us a smoother finish on the edge.

Dominick, great work on that carriage.  I'm rather partial to the Dahlgrens as they were the first of my black powder cannons.  My little one inch bore with it's cast iron carriage (from South Bend Replicas quite a few years ago) is plenty weight to move around.  I'm sure anxious to see the finished product ( painted and with the tube ).  Blaster (Bob in So. Dominick... I'm still amazed...what kind of PSI does a waterjet run at?
