fun targets
« on: May 12, 2007, 12:30:07 AM »
Good day to all, bought my 6 year old a cricket rifle. I will give it to her on her birthday and hopefully take her shooting. I was thinking of something that had a lot of action when she hit it and the best I can think of is a can of shaving cream. Is there anything else that when she hit would let her know? thanks......Bill

We really like the metal spinning targets--can usually find them cheap and they hold up well to .22
I've used small balloons. I'll sometimes use old ceramic stuff that should have been thrown away. Breaks up into little pieces--when they get real small, then I'll take a try at 'em   ;)
I like to use things that clean up easy or, like the ceramic/pottery junk, bust up real small and leave a pretty small mess that easily mixes in with the sand/dirt.
It's important to make it fun, but it doesn't have to be over-the-top.  Teach good fundamentals and safety always

Go to a pottery supply place and buy some clay, then make up targets such as small discs or rabbits, etc. After they're shot up the first rain will desolve them back into clay or just muddy water. Don't fire the clay just let it air dry. You can roll the clay out like pie dough and cut it out with cookie cutters. Any hit will make them shatter and give off a puff of dust.

Use trap clay birds.  You can get a 100 of them for about $5.  Then put 2 2x4 together with a spacer between big enough to hold the bird upright.

about anything that will explode or make a noise works i have used stuff like cans of soda pop or bottles full of water. the bottles of water work great they make a little noise fall over and drain use food coloring in it and the kid can c the water draining and know they made a hit. and something i have found out about crickett's is after about 250 or 300 shots the ejectors will mess up and u have to hold in on the pin to make it eject.

I used to go to a plinking pond and throw in large marshmallows. They go flying when you hit them just right.

Great topic!  My 6yr old daughter has been shooting at a spinner target today with her Cricket.  She is hitting it quite often and it seems to save us a few trips downrange to see where she hit.  We also shoot at cans and bottles.  I have thought about filling the bottles with water but I was worrying about ricochet from it.  I like the other ideas others posted here too!  Gonna have to try a few of them!

I like to use balloons, swinging targets and daisy shatter blast disks, these are biodigradable.  My boys don't like paper targets unless they have a animal, which also reinforces correct shot placement.

potatoes! they explode when hit and you don't have to clean them up because they will bio-degrade in a few short days if the critters don't eat them up first!!! Idaho Russets work best!! (just a plug for our Idaho spud farmers)

I kept some of those empty ozarka water bottles and filled them with a shot of chalkline powder and tap water.
If you just nick them not so much, but when you get a good solid hit they vaporize.

Potatos.
You can get a 5# bag cheap and roll out new targets.
A solid hit with a HP 22 turns a standard baking potato into a white ball about 2-3 feet round.
