new guy
« on: May 12, 2007, 01:47:26 PM »
hi folks, my name is lance and i live in floyd county virginia. i'm trying to post a picture of my confederate mortars. one golf ball size, the other .58 cal, minnie ball. not sure of the proper name for the beds i made, other than confederate. i did manage to get a small pitiful picture on my profile, i'm not too good with computers. i've been shooting black powder firearms for 30 years, one of my hobbies is antique gunsmithing, my job is custom woodworking. the golf ball mortar is 3 inch steel round stock bored out to 1.70 inch. the worm is 5/8, sponge 5/8-both fit the powder chamber. my lathe is a too small grizzly 7x12, in fact, the golf ball mortar was as big as my lathe could handle, had to order a 4 inch 4 jaw chuck with adapter plate to put a 3 inch round bar on my lathe. i'm no machinist, still learning what i can do with a lathe, plus i'm my own teacher. would like you folks to see my work and let me know what you think. hope to make some friends on here too, take care, lance

Hi Lance , welcome!  Your persistence in machining with such a small lathe sure paid off.  They're both good looking pieces. As for the computers, all I can say is hang in there, many of us have our days with these things.  Dom

Welcome Lance nice  looking guns take some more pictures  and post them for use.  Try laying down on the ground and taking some pictures at the same level as the gun.  you won't regret it.

Guys be sure and click on Lances picture to make it bigger, there are two guns in the pictures.

my lathe is a too small grizzly 7x12

A small lathe is better than no lathe.  My first one was more like a 3x9 (a Unimat SL).  Still have it although I don't really use it for much anymore.

lance,

Welcome to the board. This is like a cannon support group.   ;D  ;D First, you start with your introduction and first cannon photo. Which you have done nicely.  ;) Then before you know it you return with photos of a new toy added to your collection and so on.... This then becomes a routine one after another..... Well, you get the point. ;D ;D

As, you will see there are quite a few addicts here but, they will offer much support.... ;D Once again, welcome and we look forward to more photos.

thanks Santa Dave, but i don't know about an improvement. i just copied the mortar from a picture in the book- civil war weapons and equipment by Russ A. Pritchard jr. page 83 shows a nice little color picture of a confederate mortar next to a union mortar. i've seen real mortars like my copies around petersburg and richmond va. museums and other historic sites. but the only picture i have to go by is the one in the book.

 Lance,

It's really a nice little set you have there. I really like your implements. Did you make them? If so, you did an awesome job. Also, by looking at the last photo you posted it seems your grass needs some watering..... :D  :D :D

I'm guessing that is not grass, but pre-planting season garden stubble.

The worm has more detail on it than I ever thought a worm could have  ;)

What bluing process did you use on all the metal?

 Rick,

Being a desert dweller here in Vegas anything green and on the ground is considered grass. You should see my yard. I have no idea what's growing in it..... But, it's green. ;D

I agree 100%. I has the finest detail I have yet to see.

[/quote please no water on the grass, it's so tall i had to use the yet to be turned garden plot. o.k. lets see, i made the implement sticks. real match lock on the fire stick, with a finish nail for the ground spike. 16 guage shotgun bore cleaner, for the sponge, but it's threaded into the stick. i wanted a real looking cannon worm, so i used a musket worm, also threaded into the stick. both fit the 5/8 powder chamber very nice. i was lazy that day and didn't feel like making a sponge and worm.

you sir are the winner, it's the yet to be turned over garden plot. i cheated and used a musket worm, but the stick is all mine. now when it comes to bluing or antiquing metal, i'm kinda like a mad scientist. there are different kinds of metal through out the mortar, and i wanted it all to match. i'd really have to show you, i don't think i could write it out and make any sense of it. different kinds of acid, different heat levels, there's a fire involved. really, i'll have to have some time to write it out so that nobody gets killed and blame me. i was first just going to paint everything black, but i don't like to paint, the bed was bad enough. stay in touch and we'll figure out this bluing process.

 lance,

Thanks for that info. I commend you on your creativity. Job well done! ;)  always glad to help or share info. the worm came from dixie gun works, item number mc1302, cost 6 bucks. 12 foot rolls of match lock cost 2.50 , and really works. you can check out blockade runner, and track of the wolf, for other musket worms. take care, lance

i sure have a hard time with a computer, still haven't figured out the right way to post a reply.  intoodeep, more info for you on the worm, and where to get one. should be in the fine print above this message.
