I'm starting to acquire screwdrivers and punches and spare parts and cleaning stuff and etc. Thought I would get a cheapy plastic tool box to put them in. That way they will be all togehter and I can lose them all at the same time.

Just put it in the truck when I head out to a CAS match. Never know when you'll need that Marlin extractor....

I've got an old ex-army ammo box (200 linked 7.62). It's just the right size and you can rig up a padlock for it. They look like crap when you buy them, but give them a coat of black stove polish and you've got an instant antique!

Here's another idea. If your shootin box has got zinc plated hinges or catches on it, take them off and burn the plating off in a fire, then clean them up with a steel brush and give them a coat of stove polish... that way they look way more "period". Another way of getting a traditional finish is to heat up the steel until it turns dark grey,( no where near red) then dunk or paint it with motor oil, bee's wax is good for this too. But be warned, it's gunna smoke and stink and if the steel is too hot, you could have a fire on yer hands (literaly)

Lowes has got these neat little wooden tool boxes. Single compartment with a lift out tray. Plenty enough space for my match ammo and possibles for general maintenance. Cost around $20.

Thanks for the idea--we're out and about today so will stop by and see if ours has one. Think that would look super for CAS tools.

and Keokotah--going to look for a hand sledge hammer while I'm there, too. :grin:

Wouldn't you know it? It's not a sledge hammer, but I do carry a nylon headed mallet for settin bullets in a short barrelled 62 in 44 cal. Darned loading lever is just too short. Mallet fits nicely in my wooden box. A short 3 pounder should fit perfect.

Went to our Lowes and no wooden box but for $3.95 found a plastic one that will work. Not period correct but at least I'll loose everything at once

Wife even was all for it as my tools and parts and such are/were all over the house.

Hey Cheyenne! Sorry you didn't find the box at Lowe's. Our's don't have them all the time either. If you've a mind to, Wal-mart may also have them. Our's brings them in in small quantities and they sell out pretty quick. Good luck... :-)

The salvaged grenade box that is part of my gun cart holds enuff stuff that a few tools don't take up much room in there at all!
