How many have used this round on deer?  I am looking for a nice accurate round with very little recoil for my wife. Any info will  be helpful.

I've used it extensively on game and it's what my wife shoots in her Model 7 Remington for big game hunting.

The 7-08 in a model 7 with a good 2x7 or 1.5x5 is as close to the perfect deer rifle as you're gonna get. 
Remember now, it's your wife's rifle.  Don't be taking it away from her. (but you do need to hunt with it at least once to "check it out")   ;D

Outstanding guys, you know how it is, it is going to be my wife's rifle, but I know she won't shoot it as much as I will want to so I will just have to tell her I have to "take it for a drive" to make sure she's good!  I have always wanted the 7mm-08 and I have actually caught some flak for it from some of my friends because of it.  I don't care though I have never heard anything bad about it so it looks like it's a winner.

The 7mm-08 is an excellent choice for deer. My son and I both have it in Rem 7600.  My 10 year old grandson has one in a Ruger Compact.

i figure that your "buddies" who are overly critical of the 7mm08 probably have never hunted with one; some probably have never shot one.

I've got the 7mm-08 barrel for my Encore and it is an excellent round for whitetails.  For your consideration though, let me suggest that you also check out the .260 Rem. (actually 6.5mm-08 if it were named by the same naming convention as the 7mm-08).  I switched over to this barrel a couple of years ago and love it with 120 gr. ammo.  A little more recoil than a .243 (which could be named 6mm-08) but less recoil than the 7mm-08 and just as deadly.  Compare the ballistics on both cartridges and recoil data and you'll have two good options.

I used to reload but no longer have the time.  I'm shooting Remington Premiere 120 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips.  They're not particularly easy to find but I only use them for deer and they shoot under 1" groups out of my barrel.  My son shoots the same out of his Savage bolt-action with the same results. Sorry I can't help with the reload data but you might want to try the ballistic tips.

I customized one for my wife with a heavier Boyd laminate for even less recoil and she loves it!!

My favorite Thompson Encore pistol round for deer, I use the Hornady Lite Mags out of my 15" barrel.

The 7mm-08 is definitely a winner and in my not so humble opinion, here is the ultimate 7mm-08!



Laminate stock....Burris 3-9x40 W/Ballistic Plex reticle....154 Grn Hornady RN @ 2,760 FPS....SUB MOA Accuracy....Quick follow-up shot (if needed)

Dark squares = 1/2", Light squares = 1/4"


I've also got a Rem 700 Mtn LSS in 7MM-08 that I've had for a while and am hanging on to for my son when he gets a little bigger.  However, the 7600 has definitely taken over as my "go-to" rig.

alien319....just a word of caution....the 7MM-08 is VERY ADDICTIVE.....You take your wife's 7MM-08 for a "test drive" very often and you will become a died in the wool 7MM-08 fan like the rest of us that have discovered the virtues of the 7MM-08!

I've seen this photo before on another board (HC)
I have this very same Rem 7600 in 7mm-08.  Same gray laminate stock. A special run from Grice for Remington.  I have a Trijicon Accupoint 1x5 scope on it.  Last season was my second season toting the sweet thang round the woods...and I tagged a nice buck with it.  I'm in love with the way this caliber shoots and feels on recoil!!  This is why I sold my 30-06 a few years ago...I knew it would be collecting dust or worse...rust if kept it...so I sold it and use the 7-08.
