Whats the right way to use a jig? do you use it like you would use a regualr hook with a bobber? Or like a lure.

To complicate the answer..yes..you can use it under a float(that type of fishing is referred to as float-n-fly), just cast out and slowly reel in.  I use this method alot in spillways below our flood control lakes here in NW Mississippi.  I catch crappies and whitebass (stripes) using this method.  Smaller jigs that are used for bream, crappie, whitebass, sauger, walleyes, and trout are casted and them slowly retrieved.  I especially like the horsehead (roadrunner) style jigs.  Use a count down method to find at what depth the fish are holding..cast out and slowly count 1-Mississippi 2- Mississippi etc. till jig on bottom..reel back slowly..next time reel back at once less "Mississippi" until you find the fish..the school will usually hold pretty close to the same depth.  The offer still holds for the free jigs!

I've never jig'ed with a jig but gonna try it some day. As I understand it, you lift the jig 6 or 8 inches and the let it down on a tight line? Normally the fish hit's on the way down? For walleye's I read that if the line goes slack before hitting bottom, set the hook? Also read that the rod tip with the jig on the bottom needs to be close to the surface? There's my advice and not one bit of experience to back it up! But I have caught a lot of bass by swimming auger tail grubs on a jig. Come to think of it, I also caught a lot of salt water bottom fish by just letting a jig over the side, to the bottom, and doing nothing. My guess is the action of the swells works the jig?
