stevens 311

I have a stevens 311 in 20ga. Are the springs and parts to make it open further and easer the same as a 12ga? I want to slick it up for cowboy action. Or do I have to get parts fof a 20ga?

I ordered a set of springs for my 311 16-gauge and Trapper Gun only listed the 311 without consideration of gauge, so I'm guessing they will work. I haven't torn mine down, yet, but the only springs that came in the kit were reduced power cocking lever springs.
The biggest trouble with using the 311 or Russian Baikal (Remington SxS and Stevens 411) is that the springs in the action want to close the barrels about 1/3 of the way. Long barrel have enough weight to hold the action open, but a coach gun will not be open for your shells when you try to shove them in under pressure.
I prefer the Stoeger for CAS. It only requires that the action lever spring be relieved and a little chamber polishing.

I've never owned a 311, but almost once. 

PLEASE do NOT cut the barrels off!  Spoils its effectiveness, flexibility, and value!  It doesn't work any quicker cut off either.  What would you do if your "thing" was shortened?

I'll add a 'second' to Sir Charles comment! I shoot a 28" barreled Crescent and it doesn't slow me down one iota! The coach gun syndrome is more a product of Hollywood than anything else. Full length barrels really make no difference in speed, if one simply spends some time practicing!
