« on: May 14, 2007, 04:55:39 AM »
having picked up a nice used mod. 94 , and checking the cost of ammo $ 45.00 a box ! can anyone offer a good bullet choice  for reloading the 356  Winchester that works well in the mod. 94 ? in the 180 -220 gr. range , for deer and hogs . thanks !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Any of the 200 grain RN bullets intended for the .35 Rem. will do fine as will the Speer FN 180 and 220s. Personally I'd go with the Speer 220 FN.

Don't over look Accurate 2520. In the .358 JDJ which is only a wee bit larger in case capacity it is THE powder to beat and I never found one that did beat it. IMR4320 was the next best powder in it.

I'll give it a try !
Graybeard , or anyone when we shot the 7 TCU we made cases for it by starting with loaded .223 rem , since the contender head spaced on the rim since the extractor snaps up in the groove much like a 1911 does and holds the case in the correct position to fire we did just that and it expanded the case mouth most of the way to 7mm , making the sizing to 7 TCU much easier and with less damaged cases .
Is it possible to do the same with 307 Winchester in the 356 Winchester ? ( i have around 100 307's on hand with no gun ! )
anyway the case for both are the same except for case mouth ,
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Actually your 7 TCU trick worked not because the rim (which technically a rimless case doesn't have) caught on the extractor but because it was designed to headspace at the same datum line as the .223 case does.

If you use a tapered sizer button and lube the inside of the case mouth and use new or once fired cases the loss rate should be extremely low. At times I'd lose one or two per hundred and at other times lose none from 100 done in that manner.

Yes it should be possible to do your .307 cases the same way in theory at least. The bullet will go wobbling down the barrel but no worse than did the .224" bullet in that 7MM barrel and yes it should open up about right.

But again if you'll use a tapered sizer button and lube that case mouth on the inside you shouldn't lose many if any and will save the cost of powder, primer and bullets.

I long ago bought a few hundred .356 Winchester cases just to do a project of converting a Marlin .35 Rem. to .356 Win. I have the rifle but just havent' gotten around to sending it to JD Jones at SSK Industries for the conversion yet. I really need to get my round tuit and send it off.

Then I guess that's no real loss at all and as I said it should work fine. Not the preferred method but as you found with the 7 TCU it does work and since the bore is so much larger than the bullet going down it the pressures should never get very high and the cases should come out fine and ready to reload as .356 Winchester.

I prefer a jacketed bullet at 220 grian and up for the 356 if running full bore loads. In cast frank at mt baldy casts a nice 240 flat nose bullet or ive used the 200 rcbs both worked good but again i like the heavier one. If anyone is stuck for brass ive got quite a bit of new 356 brass that i could be horse traded out of for .357 3220 4440 brass if you have some that no more then once fired. 2 for one 4440 or 3220 brass or 4 for one if its 357 brass.

+1
I am doing some load testing with Speer 180 and 220 grain bullets and AR2207 and RL10x powder and my '94 Winchester. I can post the results if you are interested.

Hi Shootall,

William Iorg has set up a thread at Shooters Forum (Beartooth) for the .356 Win. Because the caliber is not common, the idea is to get as much information as possible in one spot. I guess we could start one here, but since this is already operational, how would you feel about adding your results and viewing the rest? It just saves posting the information twice, although adding it here does give some redundancy.

Here's the link, have a look and see what you think.

In 1988 I purchased a Marlin 336ER .356 and have been reloading for it ever since. I used the data from the Speer #11 Reloading Manual and settled on the Speer 220 grain flat nose bullet with 51 grains of BLC2 powder. It has given me excellent results with many deer harvested. They also have a 180 grain flat nose that should give excellent results. I tried it but didn't get quite the accuracy that I was getting with the 220 grain Speer bullet.

I always have to wonder about the motivation of a person who comes into a site the size of this one (close to 21,000 registered members and over 100,000 unique vistors per month) to try and get folks to go elsewhere to post info or look for info. This is especially so when that member is a brand newly registered one.

We probably have a couple dozen or more threads about the .356 Winchester here at GBO and many loads have been given and all sorts of info on it shared over the years.
