35 whelen

I have a chance to buy the Mod 77 MK II in 35 Whelen. I did some research but can't find that much about them. I know that Davidson's had a special edition in 2001 with a synthetic stock. I can pick it up for $650 and has never been fired. What do ya think Ruger Guys?

go for it ,
the .35 whelen is an excellent big game cartridge and can handle any north american big game , and has a lot of potential with handloading if your a reloader that is.

Oh ya,
I'm a reloader. I currently reload 10 straight wall cases from 38 special to 45-70 and everything in between to include the .357 Max and the .445 Supermag.  I only have reloaded the 6.8 SPC and .222 as the only bottleneck cartridges. I have done some research and it looks like the 35 Whelen is one the most efficient cartridges and fairly easy to reload. Some say it is the original wildcat cartridge.

So, the Ruger has open sights but is also has scope rings that come with it. What scope do you suggest I put on it? I was thinking about a Leopold 3-7x33. I figured it would be good for up close and also would work for those 300 yard shots. I would primarily use it for hogs here in Oklahoma.

I picked up a Ruger 77 with the old style synthetic stock at a gun show about 4 years ago. The dealer told me Ruger had changed the stock style and he had picked up a bunch in "odd" calibers (264 Mag and 35 Whelen were two). Anyway, I got a 35 Whelen for under $500, new in the box. And it shoots great! I'm using RL15 with a 200 gr Hornady, and shot a doe with it a couple of years ago. I still need to work up a load with 225's or 250's.

I have an older, fairly rare Ruger tang safety 35 Whelen. It is currently being transformed into a Hawkeye... I have taken a fair amount of game with this gun and another J.P. Sauer 35 Whelen. What you are looking at is a fine gun in a fine caliber at a reasonable price. If you hunt game that needs the thump of a Whelen I'd go for it, they are hard to find.

anything from a 4x fixed to a 2-7x or 3-9x variable should be fine for a scope choice

Did you buy the Ruger M-77 MkII .35 Whelen?  Wish I could find one!  :)

I sure did. I picked it up with 60 rounds of 225 gr ballistic tip ammo and RCBS DIES.  It has never been shot but it won't be long.  (I Hope)

You just do not see .35Whelen in many gun stores any more.I saw one in Remington 7600 pump the other day in my local store.Nice looking rifle.If anyone is interested,email me and I'll give you the name of the store here in SC.

I have one of the 77MKII in 35 whelen that has the Ruger all weather stock and the plastic grip panels have been removed and replaced with panels made from big leaf Oregon maple and it looks great. This rifle is nearly new and if anyone out there is looking for one, it is for sale! Drop me a line!

Wish I could find one, I have a Handi rifle in 35 Whelen, great round and very accurate............
