High fence hunting is ILLEGAL here in MT ,so yes,im sure they paid for this "hunt",that would make it illegal if we had pigs here to hunt and if we let 11 year olds hunt.
If it aint fair chase its FOUL,and illegal in my state!

There are no hogs in Montana?  Wow, I didn't know that.  I thought that hogs have a very wide range that would include northern states like Montana.  Do you know why there are no hogs in Montana?

G1 shootall. The winters and snow here would probably kill them.We have domestic hog operations but all have some kind of shelter or hogbarn for the cold months. There is a huge boar that lives with our neighbors horses, they have to bring him into the barn as soon as the snow flys.I wish we did have them to hunt,it would be neat to have an edible critter to hunt year round.

Ill bet this isnt the first time they have pulled the same stunt with a client, probably just the first time it made the news.

From what I know of one party involved I'm sure it wasn't. But remember in Alabama you CANNOT legally move a feral hog from one location to another so hunting feral hogs in an enclosure IS NOT something you can do and anyone down here should know that. If it's an enclosure in Alabama it has to be a barn yard raised hog or it's illegal. That's what the Fish and Game folks got involved and investigated to see if it was a barn yard hog or if they needed to arrest all parties involved for game law violations.

In Bama we have plenty of free range hogs that are in fact feral and can be tough to hunt at times or easy at others. But you can't move them into an enclosure for hunting without breaking the law. You could I suppose build a fence around a place where they already exist but unless it's a big enough fence for them to continue to breed in there to supply you with huntable numbers you'd be wasting your time and money. Down here land is too expensive to be able to buy enough to fence to keep them breeding to support hunting. So anyone who hunts hogs in an enclosure in Bama should know they are hunting pen raised hogs and why you'd call it hunting I have no clue. It's just slaughtering farm animals which is perfectly legal and accepted practice but to call it hunting is all wrong.

Hogs are tough critters Cole especially if they've gone feral and lived wild for any length of time. They have them in Canada and in Russian and Germany and other places that get just as cold as it does in MT. They could survive just fine up there I'm sure. You'd be amazed at the survival ability of a hog. They are much like cockroaches and can make it about anywhere.

Will they live off grass and sage brush? We dont have a whole lot of vegtable crops, mostly grain and alphalfa,i seriously doubt a pig is going to survive in sub zero weather a couple feet of snow and nothing to eat, when winter rolls around any crops that were avaliable have been harvested and the fields are bare, most have been disced up.There may be a few small area in the state where they could find food for the winter but most of it only offers grass and pine needles.

Well feral hogs are starting to be reported in SE MN and SW WI. As of late we haven't had any hard winters but they are claiming they can live in all of the continental U.S and parts of Canada. I did see a road kill feral hog on I 90 just east of La Crosse WI last month.

NONYA,  hogs can and will live there. Just give them time and they will be established in your area. They are spreading fast just like fire ants. YES they can live in the conditions there once they are acclimated to it. Hogs will eat ANYTHING that does not eat them first. They have been known to kill colts, calves, fawns and eat them, as well as any animal that has died. One of the best baits to catch hogs has been fish guts and bones. They will eat any plant and grub you can think of as well. They tear up crops, and coastal hay fields around here. So what makes you think that they would not eat your crops of grain and hay field's? Also believe me once you have hogs established there you would wish you no longer had them. They are a pest and a major pain in the arse. You have to kill 98% of the heard each year to keep them in check.

Yes Cole the hogs will eat anything as was stated anything that doesn't eat them first is on their menu. They will dig thru the snow to get to the roots of plants and eat the roots killing the plants. If deer and elk can find food you can bet hogs can also. As mentioned they even eat meat and are not opposed to killing to get it.

hogs will eat anything , they don't seem to be picky eaters , they are not majestic game animals , they are down and dirty survivors ,and that's the ones raised on a farm , in the old days sailing ships would carry them and deposit them on islands on their trip out so they would have food on their trip home . For that you want a critter that will be alive when you need it ! They also adapt well to change !
ROAD KILL HOG  ouch what did the vehicle look like !

Nonya,,,that's a thought about the wolves,,the hogs have no natural enemies, and they breed multiple times a year,,,now if you had a bunch of hogs there the wolves would find them easy pickings and leave the rest of the game alone,,use the hogs to control the killing of elk and other game!!

Easy pickings ? even barn yard pigs would be a handful ! I have to admit to not seeing a wolf pig fight but pigs can hold their own with a dog or three ! keep in mind pigs don't have to bite they slash ! and most of the important stuff is behind protection ! think rhino on small scale !
as far as not hunting then , they will take over if you let them ! from what i read !

That is about the opposite of how it works.  Up here we have cycles of predators, the most predominant one is the cycle between rabbits and coyotes.  As rabbit populations increase, so do coyote populations right after them, then the coyotes will start taking lots of rabbits, the rabbit population will dip and the coyote population will follow them down because of a lowered food source.

Wolves are an entirely different animal, they have more than one food source, which is why they are under attack in predator control programs.  If you increase the amount of food they have, then you increase the amount of wolves.

Here is the problem with this: less pigs won't slow down wolves.  They hunt in packs, and the larger the pack, the more succesful they are at hunting.  If you increase their food, and increase the wolf population and health, everything else is screwed, to put it lightly.  After they kill everything, you might see a drop in the population, but I mean everything.

In early settler days in the Missouri Ozarks it was the custom to let the pigs run semi-wild in the woods.  At that time the only predator I can find records of taking on a full-grown boar were the black bears.  They seemed to have a real taste for pork.  Even then the outcome of a match between the two was not always in favor of the bear as there is one record of someone finding both combatants dead.  We also had cougars and red wolves and a large population of deer.  The wolves and cougars, while I imagine would take the occasional small pig, usually found it more profitable to work on the deer and other smaller animals.  There are a lot of first hand accounts in the Turnbo Manuscripts about early Ozark life—bear hunting, encounters with wolves & cougars and yes bear and boar fights.   thelibrary.springfield.missouri.org/lochist/turnbo

IF ya get the chance read the article in FIELD AND STREAM this mo. says the father was not told it was a tame hog . The news people were on hand for the hunt ! THe cost was per pound ! and best of all the boy told his father he wished it had never happened ! the father asked if he meant the hunt , and the boy said no , he wished they hadn't told anyone !
Now this dad should get parent of the year ! He has to be proud of that young hunter !
and to think i gave the kid the benefit of the doubt when this started ! boy was i wrong !

i have been around feral hogs since 1969(first kill)
they can and will live any where, will eat any thing, and survive well on nothing.
i know of several bird dogs either killed of chased back to the truck by pigs, unless a dog
or pack of dogs know what they are doing, they are lunch.
if i am not mistake they can have 2 litters per year, i read some where that wild hogs raise
more of their offspring than any other wild animal. They are almost impossible to get rid
of once they arrive, that is why you can shoot and shoot often and not hurt a hog population once it starts

Once, on the Discovery Channel, I saw a relatively small wild hog swimming across a creek, in the Florida everglades.  An alligator tried to take him, but IMMEDIATELY turned loose, and swam towards the nearest far away place.

Why would it take 16 rounds to kill it?

Cheese

It once again begs the question from this canuk. Even if you live where you can hunt with handguns, whats wrong with a rifle? They dont make the caliber in a handgun that hits as hard as the same dia bullet in a long chambered rifle, and they just aint as accruate...50 cal.....I'm sitting here wondering just where I woulda had to hit that pig with the 50 ak throwin out 435 grs at 2300 fps for him not to have went down first crack

I shot a 250 lb. boar at 20 yds with a 300 win mag in the neck in front of the right shoulder and it stood there and looked at me , didn't knock it over and the spine was hit , bullet didn't pass thru either ! shot placement is everything but the hog dosen't always act like they should , guess they don't watch the hunting shows and know when to give up !

Maybe a hog anatomy lesson is in order. ;)

don't think so ! the hog never moved and a spine shot is a good shot , maybe some should re-think the ablity of the boar to take a lot of punishment !
