Help me make a prettier gut pile
« on: May 18, 2007, 03:54:55 PM »
I would appreciate someones explanation of how they dress out a deer from a hanging apparatus.  I've about had it on the ground and I've decided to invest a little ca$h on a simple set-up. Probably a tree/branch rig.  I don't have a trailer hitch.  Anyhow, my Cabela's catalog has a whole slew of pullies and what not.  Anybody have rex on some small time gear.  (Besides a rope and a stick between the back legs). ;) I just think that gravity might help things get a long a bit smoother.  THNX for the help.

make your own block and tackle  and hang them from a tree with a peace of rope around the head  works great this is how i  do it i use to do it in the feild and it sucks i know but i use the block and tackle thing works great dont hang them from the back legs i works ok but not as easy as hanging them from the head , go to a hard ware store and get u 2 double pullys and some rope and build your tackle or get u a cheap set out of harbor freight they work great to and cheap as heck dont take much money for a  set of block and tackle

I was on an elk hunt in northern arizona a couple of years ago, and my buddy got a real nice cow elk.  Where we were at, we could drive the jeep with a wench right up to it, throw a rope over a tree limb, and use the old stick and a rope trick, but with a wench to lift it, then we could move it up and down as we pleased to work on different parts of the animal.  Too bad we can't take the jeep everywhere....

Your stories reaffirm my thoughts that gravity may make for a less hassle dressing.  A good hoist allows for a predictable and concentrated drop of the organs while the 360-degree accessabilty allows for skinning a bit easier too it sounds ( esp. w/ a partner).  I'll look into the "coat hangers" for now and rely on a little muscle to lift next falls deer.  Cool input guys.  Preciate it. ;)

Having killed many deer here is some insight. First always hang them from the hind legs. I have used tie down straps, one for each leg and it makes it soo much easier to get the deer off the ground by yourself. Anyway have the legs as far apart as possible.  Start with the deer at an easy height to get to the rear orifices and (censored word). Carefully cut around them and then cut far enough into the pelvic opening to unhang whatever holds the anal canal. I like to use a Buck #105 for this as the blade is not too wide and it is long enough. If I have string I pull the penid and anus etc. out a bit and tie them shut. noe I cut the hide only all the way to the jaw line and cut the windpipe at the throat and free it up the neck to the chest. Across the abdomen I cut the hide with my blade by pulling it out a bit and cutting under the hide not directly toward the stomach so as not to cut the guts. I also sort of skin the hide a couple of inches wide down the chest. I then take a machete or a sharp hatchet and chot thru the rib cage all the way thru to the neck opening. Next carefully cut thru the stomach lining to the rib cage. Now gravity works for you and you can reach up into the stomach cavity and get hold of the tubing you tied off and pull it thru the pelvis. Get all of this you can out of the way and cut around  the diaphram. Now open the rib cage a bit with your hands and if you have done everything right  all the guts will come right out and hit the ground with very little cutting loose necessary. You can use the windpipe to pull out what hasn't fallen out. Any questions?

My father and I made a nice winch seen here.

It is under how we dress a deer. It has been modified from mounted in a truck, pinned to a bumper on a truck, and now it's mounted into a receiver hitch. They are not hard to make.
