It's so pretty I would go for a sled style bed that would hide less of the metal than a "Union" style bed.

Where do you find these things? !!!

The saltern mortar is a little larger around the chamber than yours but the mount could be adapted.  Yours is a little strange in that its style seems fairly early but it is virtually unornamented which is strange for an early piece.

I always thought this is a neat setup.  Even at one time fancied building me a set up like this.   I still think it's a neat setup, but I have come to believe it is an aberration.

The first recollection I have of this set up is this picture from  Round shot and Rammers

Notice it's a 10 inch seacoast mortar tube not a coehorn pattern.  The drawing is supposed to be from a photo, but I have never seen the photo.

Here photo of the real thing

And a line drawing from AOP.

Later I saw this on Cannon-mania website.

Since then I don't know how many of these we have had posted here. But quite a few.

I guess what I am trying to say this isn't the right base for you little mortar.  Not only doesn't it match, it's passe

I do like the one George posted.  But be patient for a few days let the others dig one out of their books.

Doug I agree, I also do like the sled type mortar bed. I think this is the route I may go ... George. Len and rifleshooter2 mortar beds might be more original  But I may swing more towards the sled bed... unless someone can fine a full bed type more appealing... any input will be well received.. please send and photos or plans .. Thanks ED

I like the three you are currently reviewing.  Be interesting to see what other ideas teh folks can come up with.

I currently have my 6 PDR mortar tube at  Powderkegs. The idea was for him to round the end and attach the trunnion.  Then i would build a Confederate pattern Coehorn.   I have been toying with the idea that I should build the tube into a 10 inch seacoast and have Poderkeg sand cast up the sides of the base for me in iron.   A better idea just cam to me. Proceed with the Confederate 6 PDR project and then build another gun in the 10 inch Seacoast pattern...but wait we aren't talking about my gun here, we are talking about your gun

I was just looking through Manucy's Artillery Through the Ages{/i] and there is a mortar in there called a  Spanish 10 inch bronze mortar 1759-88 that is very similar to yours.

EL Cazador 66,

Been out of town for a couple of days so, I just saw this post. As, this post first started I already had a bed in mind. But, "rifleshooter2" beat me to the punch.

I have seen a few of this style and it is by far my favorite for that type of tube. However, I would just change the style of the iron a bit. There was a pair on GunBroker awhile back that had nicer iron. But, I never saved that photo.   >:( Anyway, glad to see you got it and it all worked out. ;D

Hey intoodeep,

I think that you and rifleshooter2 are right I should go full bed then a sled type bed.. I've been looking all over the Internet found this similar style mortar in these photos below.. I may have the mortar bed tweaked a bit like in the second set of photos minus the rope and some added hardware...

WoW ! thats sure a good looking barrel.  I love the clam shell for the vent  ., it will help alot getting  powder down the hole for a slow match. but I find the Daniel King Howitzer No# 1  tail -type  to be really unique and much closer to the period I am after. Good show man !!!

Ed, here are the pictures of the mortar and its base that was listed on GunBroker for several months and never sold.

I like the brass hardware to go along with the barrel.

The laminated 1 inch boards don't do the barrel justice.

Fewer, thicker I think would look nicer.

They prolly don't have a saw mill in NYC ? If you are looking for something thicker, I can give you the phone number of the sawmill down the street from me (southwestern Mass, not far from I91/Rt57 interchange). It would probably be cheaper to drive up to pick something up rather than have it shipped. Expect a year or so drying time minimum if you go 6 inches or so thick. Maybe order a selection and make the drive worth while. Something tells me there will be more needs for you in the future  ;)

First I want to say thanks to all for your interest & input on this thread... Its been interesting so far... As much as we like to keep these cannons &  mortars projects as original as possible we all like to add our own flavor to them... So with that said I have sort of an idea what and how I want this baby Bronze Brit Mortar mounted... So in the weeks to come I'll post this little puppy fully dressed... But if you see anything  worth posting please do... Rickk I agree about the laminated 1 " board... I let you know If I need your local saw mills #... With the all travel Ice hockey I've done with my son that sounds like a hop and skip... as you know there's never enough wood...

I think I'm going to have to get a hunk of brass and turn one of these for myself. That's a cool little mortar.

Oooh...necro-post!  Pretty good looking bed you built there!

What did El Caz end up with for his nice little brass mortar?  I've probably seen it if it was ever posted, but I'm not sure.

Edit: I guess it didn't take too long for me to find it.  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,140728.msg1098565640.html#msg1098565640
