A question on Turk 03/38s for those Mauser gurus.......
« on: May 19, 2007, 05:20:22 AM »
I picked up an action from a 1938 Ankara arsenal rebuild.
It turns out it was orginally from a "K" action '03 Mauser in 7.65 Mauser that Turkey ordered from the Mauser factory as a modernising move at the time.
Apart from a missing magazine follower and the need to replace the trigger it's in good shape.
Problem is I'm not sure if this has a standard large ring thread like other M98 style actions or a small ring thread.
What is it likely to be and what should I look for to find out?
If you'd like to see pics let me know.

I have owned a bunch of Turks but all 38 models...The ones I had were all large ring, small thread configuration.

Thanks for those links, Aardvark.
Now I know what I can do with it.
I'll look out for a M96 bbl in 6.5x55 or, if possible, perhaps even a Mauser 95 bbl in 7x57.
I may even have it re-reamed to 6.5/284 or 284 Win respectively.
280 Rem would've been nice but the action isn't really long enough with a lot of fiddling.

The so called "Tweed" which is a 6.5 Swede barrel on a Turk action is a sweet shooting piece.I have several friends who have them.

So I've heard.
I'll be looking for as long as bbl as I can get.
In fact if I can get a decent M96 29" bbl that would be great.
I intend to set it up to shoot 300yd benchrest which it should do with ease, either in 6.5x55 or 6.5/284.
I know the longer bbl doesn't really make a difference in terms of accuracy when using a scope but it'll give it an edge in velocity.

ed. Mmmm, re-reading this it sounds like I haven't got a clue how to built a competition rifle, right?
This isn't for a proper benchrest rifle.
I'm going to use it to play at the range and for varmint work.
Plus it should be fun to annoy my mate.
He has a really nice M96 that absolutely slaughters bunnies with 100gn Nosler Ballistic Tips.
Something that shoots even flatter should seriously frustrate him.
The foxes and rabbits probably won't like it either.

I did two in .280 Remington..The key there to avoid doing action work is to load your own and seat the bullets deep enough to clear the action...I did that on a 25-06 too.

See, if I get a 280 I want to be able to seat the bullets as far out as I can.
Why mess with possible feed problems?

I understand that aspect as well. Then you would have to modify the action...If you went with the 7x57 you would have a good 7mm round and not have to mess with it.
