SJ, I am with you.  Tell me where I can send me Swamp dollars to subsidize a free hog hunt for this trash-talkin yahoo that dares bash our pastime.  I don't see anyone bashing his sport, or how he hunts his meat.   I also still hunt and stalk hunt for deer and hogs.    I have largely stopped still hunting and stalk hunting as they are impersonal.
I have recently started dog hunting.  I prefer the thrill and excitement of dog hunting with knife and spear, as well as a pistol.   If you will throw in a hog hunt for him, I will buy the knife AND the spear.

Also, NONYA, I have a question for you.   Since you refer to those of us that hunt with dogs stupid and morons, I would ask you if you have ever taken the GRE (Graduate Record Exam). I have and scored 1150 out of 1300 (that's 97th percentile for you, smarter than 97% of Americans).  When did you take the test and what did you score?

GB, pls edit this post if you think it necessary.  I make this post simply because I take offense at being called stupid and moron by someone who has the temerity to bash how I fill my freezer. GB, thank you for this wonderful forum.

Give up boys.  You are playing against a stacked deck.  It is usually better to ignore those who are never held accountable than to argue with them and get yourselves into hot water.  Whether you are right or wrong YOU will be the only one held accountable for anything you say.

One against against many who enjoy.  I suggest you discuss the hunt and ignore the personal garbage.

I hope this can get back to the hunt.

Nonya, if the challenge of elk hunting in Montana was ever to be an invitation, I will gladly accept.   I would even be willing to swap a Florida hunting or fishing trip for the experience. What do you say on the matter?

I have no problem with a person not liking to hog hunt the way we do even being morally against it. But don't judge our sport,,, or us personally because of it.... especially when you have no experience with either.

This particular section is set up for hog hunters. If you don't have questions or anything nice to say... stay in your own section. Its that easy. I don't go to other sections bashing the way they do things and I don't expect people to come here and do it. Its simply forum etiquette. Most people know that,,, but there is always one that needs to be reminded.

Not trying to be dis-respectful  but its easy to say to agree to disagree when they aren't talking about you,,, personally. Not that I like to beat a dead horse,,, but I will stand up for the sport. As a hunting community we should all be supporting each other,, especially with some of this new legislation coming out.

I love fishing in the Keys. You never know what you might catch...  snapper, tarpon, dolphin, wahoo, trout, reds...

Tarpon are fun...

But so are these...

even these when the start boiling up. Like having a lead weight on the end of your line.

Lobster season is also lots of fun.

Nonya,,,we don't stab anything!!!! We kneel on the head (avoiding the cutters) and reach down and cut their throats, I use a 3" old Shrade pocket knife sometimes or a 4" gerber folder depending on the size of the hog.  These are wild and dangerous animals, and to me is the ultimate form of hunting.  I've killed my share of large and sometimes dangerous game (cougars and bears) with rifle, bow, and muzzleloader.  But NOTHING is closer to the real thrill of hunting than getting very close and personal with the game you're killing.  And after reading all of your posts, it seems you are judgemental to a point of ridiculousness and rudeness! Some people would say shooting animals with high power rifles and scopes is killing not hunting, shooting over food plots in stands, the same.  I guess if it ain't your way it's the wrong way, don't knock it till you try it, but I really suspect you just ain't got those hangin' down thingies to get it done! (We don't do it the Tred Barta way, come on down here to Florida and I'll show you how we do it)  Also Mensa member with IQ of 152.

Why don't you use your expanded intellect to explain to me how you use a spear without stabbing? That must be some trick?SO let me get it straight, you let the dogs corner the pig,You hold it down and cut its throat?I apologize for my lack of apathy but I just don't see this as hunting, you talk about getting personal all the time, personal is you and the game in my mind, not me and a pack of dogs against the game.If I could hunt them with a bow or any other weapon in my arsenal i would enjoy the heck out of it,I would love to stalk and kill a enjoy or Russian boar with my bow some day.I'm sure there are styles of hunting or fishing that I do that you wouldn't be interested in,you may even find them idiotic,I wouldn't blast you for sharing your opinion of them,i certainly would start sharing my IQ or highschool GPA to support my view.

It was gone a long time ago. Tuna like that you cut into cubes and put on a bowl of ice with some sauce/ dip and eat while you are cleaning all the other fish. ;D

Nonya,,I don't hunt with a spear,,my last hog was with a contender 30-30, but I have hunted them with a knife.  The dogs bay the hog and than we let loose the catch dogs,,they grab an ear and hold the hog, we than leg the pig by grabbing the back legs and try to flip it on its back, than one of us will kneel on its head and cut the throat of the hog. These are NOT game animals but vermin that need to be killed.  They are almost impossible to control and we have just found challenging ways to control them.  They have become an extra income for a lot of the ranchers here in Florida.  The problem I have with your posts is the condescending attitude you have with anything you don't agree with.  Maybe this is not for you BUT the high and mighty way you express yourself is a poor way of communicating with others who may enjoy the hunt a little different than you.  Just try to look at it the way we do here in Florida, these animals do a tremendous amount of damage here to both the environment and the local game. We don't treat them as normal sporting game, as neither does the Florida Game Commission.  About Tarpon, I have a really nice 23' center console that is totally set up for Tarpon fishing.  We have some great tarpon fishing here in Tampa Bay, or I can make the trip down to Boca Grande for some of best in Florida.  The new moon is on us next week so I'll be on the water for 3 days drifting with the pass crabs for tarpon, I will be thinking about you in the Big Sky country.  Just try to keep an open mind and have a little bit more of a positive attitude when you post about a way of hunting that you are totally unfamiliar with!!  I've done it your way for most of 40 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it, and I have a place out in the Sacramento mountains in New Mexico where I continue to hunt for mulies, elk and bear. Just lighten up a little and quit trying to pi$$ people off here in the hog hunting section!!

Any OTC tags, man?  I don't have to draw for hogs or tarpon in Florida.   Instead, we have slot limits.

As a non resident you have to draw, your odds of drawing the bull tag on my place are far better than mine,10% of our hard to draw tags are reserved for non res and the number of nons that apply for the tag are low.Yhe im scared S***less thats why I dont want to do it,you figured me out!Ive been on cape buffalo, leopard and barren ground grizzly hunts,Im quite sure I could handle a pig surrounded by hounds,I have no interest in your style of "hunt",get over yourself not every hunter is going to see what you see in thei thing.

Relax?I just explained to you how good your odds were of drawing one of the hardest to get bull elk tags in MT.The rest of it was in response to a post by another member that was deleted by a Mod.,they should have left it up so you could have had a good laugh.

I understand.  I guess I misunderstood the part you had directed at someone else.  My apologies.    Sometimes threads are a little difficult to follow.  I guess the elk hunt is out this year.    Perhaps next  year.   As for a hog hunt in trade, how about a conventional hunt, ie sans canines?  There are many places that a fellow can put out a stand or set up a ground blind for them.  In fact, there is a great place near me.  No dogs allowed, and is only opened for hunting by the state a few times each year.

I will make a note for the lottery next year.  Any special restrictions on the area?

Id rather do the tarpon trip,Im not much for sitting in blinds and tree stands. There are no restrictions other than the season, the tag is either sex and you can shoot any elk,our ranch butts up against several thousand acres of wilderness and gives us access that t would take most a day to walk into.

Alright, I think we are on.    I will start making some phone calls on charters.   I am not certain what times of the year they run off  Jacksonville, but I am certain the local charter captains will know.    Let me know when you want to do the charter.

BTW, where in Montana is this ranch located?  I want to see a look at the terrain in my topographical map book.

4 miles south of Wolf Creek MT.,Sheep Creek Drainage.Follow sheep creek up from little prickly pear creek until you see the federal land start, that boundry is our property line,1/2 mile below that boundry is our cabin. The only passable roads into that part of the drainage are ours.

If NONYA has such a low opinion of pig hunters why is he always posting on the hog hunting forum?   ;D  I agree they are just pigs, I shot mine in TX with a 308 and it fell over.  But one time when I was in high school when hog prices went way down we bought a couple to butcher, about 250 pound hogs.  I killed them in a stock trailer with a knife, the 308 is much easier and cleaner!  I will pass on killing the wild ones with a knife, if that is the way a man wants to hunt more power to them.  Just like chasing coons, mountain lions, or hell quail for that matter I am sure it is more about watching the dogs work than actual killing.

Traditional German way with a spear is to drive them or use dogs and when the big old boar charges, the spear is held and the boar runs himself up it.  Basically you set yourself up to take the charge of a 200 lb or bigger hog that is trying to rip your legs to shreds.  German guy here was hunting about two years ago on a drive hunt from a ground stand and got killed while he was reloading.  Seems he shot empty and then a boar got his femoral artery while he was fumbling for cartridges.  Pretty personal I'd say...

Its not like the pig is held down or anything for you to stab. I have had pigs drag my whole pack. I literally had to run to catch up with the hog and stab it on the run or grab on and hope some one is coming behind me.

Hogs will spin just like a bull at the rodeo. Imagine standing there watching the hog spin and timing when you are going to jump in a grab a hold of it. Makes you feel like a rodeo clown... and just because you are holding on doesn't mean you are in control.

Not to mention you are most likely going to have to crawl in the thickest, thorniest spot on the ranch. At least rodeo clowns are in an open arena and have some where to run... we don't always have that luxury.
