I got the 50 AE tonight

I got the 50 AE tonight on Gunbroker... I have decided that when I get the money I will send it to Freedom Arms and get the 500 WE cylinder fitted to it. This was the barrel length I wanted and it has upgraded grips and an action job. It was made in 1997 and only shot 50 times... :>)   I think I got a good deal. I already have an AMT automag in 50 AE so I have loaded ammo ready to shoot. What is the best bullet to shoot in the 50 AE in a revolver. I think I have 300 or 400 of the Speer 325 gr. hp's to load. If I remember correctly they don't have a crimping grove. Will any of the jacketed  bullets made for the 500 S&W work or are they all to heavy?

any of the .501 bullets should work. the ae is taper crimped so the bullet doesnt need a crimping canelur

I use the 325 gr. Speer JHP in my .50 AE Mdl. 83, and like it. I fiddled with the taper crimp a great deal and experimented with a number of loads, to find one which was very accurate and where there was no appreciable bullet back-out. The 325 Speer @ 1100-1150 fps  works very well on large hogs, and similar sized animals.
While it is true that no crimp groove is needed with the taper crimp dies, the .50 AE case is tapered, which gives a taper crimping surface that is less than what it would be if the case was straight (like a .45 ACP) and not tapered. This inability to get a good heavy crimp to enhance accuracy and prevent bullet back-out with heavy loads  is the very reason that the .500 WE was developed by FA. It MAY be the case that your semi-auto loads will do not do well in your FA. I hope they do. It MAY be the case that you will have to develop lighter loads for best accuracy and to prevent bullet back-out. If so, keep  at it, and also return the gun to FA for the .500 WE cylinder. All of this will be well worth the effort and cost.
If you're an HHI member, and keep old copies of  THE SIXGUNNER, you can refer back to my articles on the .50 AE and .500 WE  (April 2003, Aug. 2003, and Dec. 2005) for load development info, etc.

Ken, I use to get the HHI paper back in the early 90's but I got side tracked on other things and quit handgun hunting about 10 years ago. ( I started hunting with a longbow)  I wish I would have kept getting those papers because they were very good reading. If it is possible could you email me some of your recommended lighter loads for the 50 AE in the FA revolver. All the loading data Ifind is pushing the 325 speer 1250 to 1350 fps. My loads for my auto are loaded pretty hot so I will keep an eye on the bullets as I shoot a cylinder full to make sure they are not moving forward.. My email is  longbow5@hotmail.com

As Lloyd points out, the 325 Speer doesn't have, and doesn't need a cannelure or crimp groove to work in the .50AE. Adding one would do nothing to help with the special problems of reloading the tapered .50AE case for use in a revolver, as opposed to the semi-auto for which it was designed, or a single shot pistol.
