Automatic fly reel

I have an old Shakespeare Model 1821 automatic reel that needs a cleaning.
Is there a safe way to open these things up without having springs shooting out all over the room?
Thanks in advance.

not sure , i took the line off and sprayed with break cleaner then dripped light oil in the holes and slots , that spring looks like it would be harder to put back than smoke !
