Buff Classic front sight inserts - where to get?
« on: May 23, 2007, 11:09:19 AM »
It appears the deal for the Buff Classic is moving ahead in a sorta convoluted way. I spoke to the fellow who has it at the shop and he says he'll talk to them as soon as he can reach them to have it headed my way as part of the deal between me and Ken.

I'm told it's new but without box and without the inserts for the front sight. He "thinks" it might have one insert in it but isn't sure which. So where do I get the rest? Got a clue the cost? Is there anything else that "should" have been in the box I'll need? I've been assured both proper front and rear sights are in place on it but just that the inserts for the front are missing.

I spoke with the guy at the gunshop and he's just waiting for the FFL from my end and I was told that would get faxed today so perhaps before the end of next week I'll have a BC in hand.

I have an extra set of Lyman 17A inserts, I'll drop em in the mail to ya. I use the Lee Shaver inserts, so I don't need the original inserts. ;)

I think there's supposed to be a locking mechanism (part # MFC-30) and a Marlin pad lock to secure it. Lee

Current productioin firearms from H&R now have chamber locks, for those models that they're made for anyway.

Wow, thanks Tim. When I read your reply to my PM I didn't realize you'd posted that offer. I've had a couple sets over the years but always let them go with the rifle when I traded it off and I wasn't sure that the Lyman inserts were what it took either.

For sure a lock is of no concern to me. I just toss those silly things when I get home if I even bother taking them out of the box. If that's all I'm missing other than I assume an Onwer's manual I'll be fine once the inserts are obtained.

Those BCs are quite nice looking rifles and I've been thinking about one for quite a long time but just never made me buy one. I think I saw and held one out in OK at the first PD shoot and that's the only one I've seen in a store for sale. I was too far from home to be buying it unless I had it shipped to me and figured my FFL guy could get one as cheaply if I decided to get one.

Should I decide I like it what would be involved in getting the .45 Colt and .38-55 barrels for it. I assume the factory would fit them up and that the stock would be same on BC as on both those. Would separate fore arms be required for both those or would the BC fore end fit either/both?

I've long wanted a .38-55 something but the reports of trouble with these make me wonder if I really want one.

Should I return it would the trigger job they do be "good enough"? I'm not at all sure I want to take on that job. I used to mess with such but with my close up vision pretty well gone and arthritis so bad in my hands messing with small parts these days seems to mostly result in frustration and little else.

Getting the additional barrels factory fitted is just a matter of shipping the frame and stock set off to them with an order form, put on the order form that you'd like the trigger pull reduced to 3-3½lbs, wouldn't hurt to put a note or tag on the frame to the same effect, then at least the gunsmith will know that's what ya want in case they don't put it on the invoice.

http://hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.aspx

The BC carbine forend is shorter, but the standard forend would work fine, you could also order the carbine forend at the same time you order the barrels, it's $31.88, part #R03944.

If you get the 38-55 barrel, it comes with no sights, be sure to order them if you want em, their price on the WGRS is $18, about half of what it is anywhere else.

The 38-55 is a good shooter with the right cast bullets, jacketed can be a nightmare since they're too small in diameter for the overbored barrel, at least so far anyway. Handirifle is shooting .379" cast in his, much to his joy, and no problems with an undersized neck in the chamber, which used to be an issue.

That sounds good. Cast is likely all I'd shoot from either of the three. I'll wait and see how I like it before deciding to do anything on the other barrels. If it works well and I can get a mould that fits and shoots well the .38-55 woud likely be my favorite of them but I have a couple good .45-70 moulds and a LOT of bullets I've cast up from them on hand.

You'll be getting the 38-55 then, the 45-70 BC is an excellent shooter with both cast and jacketed. I shoot cast almost exclusively in my 45-120 BC, but I also have a 45-70 BC that loves jacketed too!! The black target below was shot with 525gr cast bullets at 200yds with a Williams FP Target sight on my 45-120 BC, the other target was the 350gr Hornady in the scoped 45-70 BC at 100yds.

Here's a good read from the FAQs on cast bullets in the 38-55..

Inserts are ready to go in the mail, it'll go in the mail in the am when the wife takes it to work with her, bless her little heart!! ;)

GB,
I would also suggest the Lee Shaver inserts much finer than the originals, although it is hard to pass up some free Lymans. This has got to be the best bunch of guys I have ever dealt with.  BTW, my .38-55 barrel locked up nice and tight to my son's BC frame.

I've used the Lyman inserts with perfect satisfaction on guns I've owned in the past I just never kept the inserts when I sold the rifles. They'll work fine for me and you can't beat the price.

I'll do you a trigger job at no charge if you still need your trigger adjusted. I do hold an FFL and as such, you can ship your receiver directly to me. Just pat the return shipping and insurance and I'll have the trigger completed same day as received and shipped back to you the following day. just list your exact pull weight....

Like Quick said, my 38-55 is working out fine.  Been using the CheyCast BPCR bullets http://www.cheycast.com/catalog.htm (scroll down the page).  The website says they are .380 but mine measure .379.  I assume this is after lube/sizing.  My bore is very consistantly .379, and the lands are .374.  I'm still experimenting with loads but am using BP only with mine.

I've had my heart and mind set on a WM Malcom scope setup  for it but after talking with Lee Shaver again, I might just go with another Soule rear sight.  I could still use the same rear sight if I add a 45-70 barrel later on.  He is selling them on ebay right now, waiting for his son to finish his new web site.  The old site is www.egunsmith.com and his prices are a little behind.  His web site shows the modified pedersoli sights but Lee is making his own now and it is all explained here.

If you've never dealt with Lee, he is honest, fair and does excellent work.

Tim,
I didn't think the 1-20 twist of the BC would stabilize much over 400gr.  very impressive shooting.

BTW
I just sent Lee an email ordering the sight for myself FYI ;)
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

It shoots the 555gr Saeco #20 just as well!!! Bernie(dodd3) has shot his home brewed 500gr gas checked bullets at  800yds in his BC using the Smith sight, so the 1:20" not shooting long range well is just a myth, his group size was about 16" IIRC.

thx,

Tim

The Saeco is labeled .458", the  Beartooth bullets are labeled .459", they both measure .460", that's probably why they shoot so good!!! ;D

Grizz, I've only shot it in my 45-120 at 1790fps. But Marshalll has load data for the 45-70 on his web site. ;)

A waay cool video at the bottom of the page, too!! ;D

Thanks Tim, that's my video! My MV is less than 1500fps from my guide gun and a little over 1500 from my longer barrels. Are you shooting blackpowder under that bullet?

No, 5744 or H4895, althought the H4895 is real position sensitive in the big 45-120. You may have to throat the BC to load a full charge using Marshall's data, I have some loaded up for my 45-70s H&Rs, but I've not shot them yet, and I've throated all of em  ~.250" deeper.

The piledriver drops right in my BC crimped in the groove. Because my charge is so moderate I may not be getting full velocity out of the long barrel. Thanks.

Perhaps you are seeing why we love our fixation with Handis now, as I know you have long time wondered. I am sure your Remy's wont be getting too cold though.
Have fun with it, and I can speak for all here that we want a range report.
