My favorite 45 Colt load.
« on: May 23, 2007, 12:18:47 PM »
Today I settled on 23 gr. of H110 under a 250 gr. lead SWC with a CCI 300 primer in place.  Out of my FA '83 6"er I get 1150-1200 fps and that's plenty for anything up to black bear. Maybe I'll get a 45 Colt barrel for my Encore and see what happens there, its sure worth a look-see.

I only have one load in 45 Colt, so it has to be my favorite ;D, a max load of lil'gun in a 20" H&R BC Carbine gets me 1917fps with the 250gr Speer GDHP, gonna work on the same load with the 230gr gas checked Lyman 454490 next, would've been today, but hurt my back again. ::)

Dusty
That would be verry close to the hunting load that I am using for the .45 Colt.
There might be some controversy on your primer choice as this topic has been discussed before. I have to admit that I use the Fed 150’s and the CCI 300. No Chrony here but I put a good crimp on em and they go Boom everytime.

All of my non-mag primer loads are gone now & my current loadings with that powder
Have CCI 350’s in them. Advantages could be cold weather ignition (can be a reality here) And also tighter groups. Will have to try them to see if at least the tighter grouping thing is true.

Sorry to hear about your back Tim. My bandaged up fingers don’t seem to be so bad now compliments of the Dragoon back SBH.

Thanks, it's a chronic thing due to a crushed disc, probably have to do something about it eventually, other than just living with it! :-\ There's always next week....hopefully!!

Dusty : that seems a fine load and pistol as well..bear and deer medicine, perfect... how about hogs ?  would that load be safe in a lighter framed gun like my Rodeo by usfa ? looking for a load that will put em down without blowing up the gun, I like it so far.
have other guns for hotter shooting and farther shooting, but
How is the accuracy and the range you get with that load ?
tell it all...thanks

if dusty doesnt mind ill field this. The load would be an excellent hog load. NO it is not a load for your rodeo. I wouldnt push that bullet over 900 fps in a rodeo but even at those levels it would be a great deer bear and hog gun. As to primers. I personaly have used 110 alot with non mag primers and in some cases actually get better accuracy with standard primers. I do switch to loads in the winter using 110 using mag primers though. For the most part ive dont use much 110/296 anymore. Its just not a very flexible powder. It is a little harder to ignite then alot of other powders and it doesnt take to down loading very well at all. Lilgun is another one that is a good powder for full power loads but for lighter loads its fell on its face for me for accuracy. If your not going to redline your gun powders like 2400 aa9 and 4227 are alot more flexible and are easier to ignite. I probably use more aa9 then anything  because surplus is available and its about half the price and that means alot to me at the volume i shoot. But if i had to pick one favorite powder for the 44s and 45s it would definately be h4227 and given the load limits to your rodeo id look hard at hs6 or something like unique herco or power pistol as there about the best powders at pushing 250s to 900 fps out of sixguns.

Hey I shoot a S&W25-5 with 23.3grs of H110 with CCI Mag primer. That load is "Bad to the Bone" . Some mentioned I was pushing it.Read about that load from an article on Hand Loads .com by a guy with same gun shoots it and even heavier loads. Asked the Tech people at Sierra they said If the revolver your shooting that load  the manufacture also chambers that identical frame also in 44 magnum your safe shooting the hot loads. Any how out of my gun that load ( 6"BBL) produces 1,050 FPS and kicks like a mule.I love it.

Powder is cheap (kind of) hazmat will eat you if don’t order several jugs of powder.

They sell pull down bullets also.

Not sure what powder Lloyd is using, but I use WC 820.  It has the same characteristics and loading properties as AA#9.  The powder is in fact a Hodgdon powder (H108 commercial version).  I called them and they sent me loading data for the guns I intended to use it in.  You can also use the data for AA#9 for this powder.

It is a surplus powder that can be bought for a very reasonable price.  I paid as little as $54 for an eight pound jug.  As stated, the hazmat will up the price some.  See if you can go in with a couple of guys to keep the price down.  Just google WC820 surplus powder and you will get plenty of places to buy.

Hope this works for you.  Been using this powder, along with (IMR) 4895 for a few years and love it.

I understand from a couple of different sources that WC820 is a surplus M1 Carbine powder. I've fired a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine & from what I remember, the muzzle flash was very reminiscent of H110, which I heard was the powder for that cartridge. Is there any relationship in burn rate between WC820 & H110? Just curious, & thanx, jd45

I called Hodgdon up about this powder and they said the commercial version of WC820 is H108 -- not H110.  The only relation between the two is that they are in the same category of powders.  They are both medium burn pistol powders.  Beyond that there is nothing else.

Now as far as loading data, WC820 and AA#9 share the same load characteristics.  As with any load data and reloading procedures caution should always be used when developing a load.

Thanx Larry, I wasn't intending to "experiment" in a direction I shouldn't with it, I was just curious about it. jd45
